| While reading the thread on what fathers should teach their sons, the thought occurred to me that I should pick up a Boy Scout Handbook. Are the one's being published today worth having? If not, what was the last year that they were valuable? |

Older is generally better. Last year they did reprint of the original Brit scoutbook--if you're using it for Starship Troopers-style "History and Moral Philosophy" indoc it would probably be your best choice. More indepth outdoor skill stuff too, including skills we aren't allowed to teach anymore like recon, tracking and stalking. the current (11th) edition is heavier on graphics and lighter on content than the one I was issued when I joined (the 10th)--but I don't take as much issue with that as most, cause the knots didn't stick in my head until (as an EAGLE instead of a 2/c or Tenderfoot ) I read the 11th cover to cover out of pure boredom cause I was working waterfront and the river was flooded.

The boy scout manual is mainly focused on boy scouts and their path to Eagle. The book you want if you aren't a scout, but want to survive in the wild is the field manual. It is less program oriented and has more useful stuff in it for a non-scout. Link The less expensive version |
Does this one include any of the philosophy of Scouting? |

I would recommend this book also............ The Good Citizen's Handbook : A Guide to Proper Behavior (Paperback) Liberals hate it.....so I know it is good on a lot of subjects. |
This is a classic response from someone on Amazon:
Made me laugh for ten minutes. I think I'll order ten. ...the horror..."printed in Hong Kong!!" LOL |

Here's a cool link that tells about all the Handbooks (all the different editions) and the differences between them: www.troop97.net/bshb1.htm |
