While reading the thread on what fathers should teach their sons, the thought occurred to me that I should pick up a Boy Scout Handbook.  Are the one's being published today worth having?  If not, what was the last year that they were valuable?

I would say any Boy Scout manual printed prior to 1990 would probably suffice, probably the older books would be best. Something printed between 1955 and 1985.

The new one worked for me.

Older is generally better.

Last year they did  reprint of the original Brit scoutbook--if you're using it for Starship Troopers-style "History and Moral Philosophy" indoc it would probably be your best choice. More indepth outdoor skill stuff too, including skills we aren't allowed to teach anymore like recon, tracking and stalking.

the current (11th) edition is heavier on graphics and lighter on content than the one I was issued when I joined (the 10th)--but I don't take as much issue with that as most, cause the knots didn't stick in my head until (as an EAGLE instead of a 2/c or Tenderfoot) I read the 11th cover to cover out of pure boredom cause I was working waterfront and the river was flooded.

I take that back, the 9th edition worked for me. Never used the newer ones.

I don't know what the current version is, but I remember them changing around the time I was getting my Eagle and not liking the new one at all. I'll have to look and see what version mine is. Very useful book.

The boy scout manual is mainly focused on boy scouts and their path to Eagle. The book you want if you aren't a scout, but want to survive in the wild is the field manual. It is less program oriented and has more useful stuff in it for a non-scout.

The less expensive version

Does this one include any of the philosophy of Scouting?

I would recommend this book also............

The Good Citizen's Handbook : A Guide to Proper Behavior (Paperback)

Liberals hate it.....so I know it is good on a lot of subjects.

The older Scout Field Manuals are also great.  I have a big stack of Scout books my Dad gave me...even has Sea Scout manuals and some of them go back to the 1930s.

This is a classic response from someone on Amazon:

Unbelievable!, March 22, 2004
Reviewer: "armordilo" (Toledo, OH United States) - See all my reviews
I was appalled when a friend showed this book and I realized it was published in 2001. It is racist (there are only white faces in the book until we get to foreign countries), sexist (only women are shown doing house[work]), critical of vegetarians (EAT MEAT to be a good citizen !!!) and for some reason printed in Hong Kong!!

Made me laugh for ten minutes.

I think I'll order ten.

...the horror..."printed in Hong Kong!!"

LOL

The new version sucks, the one before that, the 10th version, is one of the best. But definitely get the Field Guide if you're looking for the outdoor info type stuff.

You could never get away with publishing a book with this title and cover pick today… sad how times have changed in 100 years.

Here's a cool link that tells about all the Handbooks (all the different editions) and the differences between them:
