My Daughter came home with a brain teaser today, it goes like this... 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 How many different ways can you come up with the #17, you can use any combination BUT you can only use the # once in each group (number sentance). Good luck let's see what you can come up with. Del |
9+8 7+6+4 3x5+2 (1 is outta luck I guess) Off the cuff - any good? |
Yeah, but what fun is coming up with the lowest possible number of solutions? Nobody has even started using exponents. 3 squared plus 8 is 17. So is 3 cubed minus 9 minus 1. For every simple equation that doesn't already contain the number one you can raise one of the numbers to the power of one and come up with another solution. |

8 + 9 = 17 1 + 7 + 9 = 17 2 + 6 + 9 = 17 3 + 5 + 9 = 17 1 + 2 + 5 + 9 = 17 1 + 3 + 4 + 9 = 17 2 + 7 + 8 = 17 3 + 6 + 8 = 17 1 + 2 + 6 + 8 = 17 4 + 5 + 8 = 17 1 + 3 + 5 + 8 = 17 4 + 6 + 7 = 17 1 + 3 + 6 + 7 = 17 1 + 4 + 5 + 7 = 17 2 + 3 + 5 + 7 = 17 2 + 4 + 5 + 6 = 17 1 + 2 + 3 + 5 + 6 = 17 |
