Watched the movie last night, I thought it was pretty good. Anyone here read/know of any good reading on this mission? I know McNabb wroye a book on it, are there any others that the hive recommends? |
ANdy, How did he screw up? By not scrubbing the mission when he saw the open terrain? Or by trying to march west to Syria instead of south towards coalition forces?

I'd recommend "The Real Bravo Two Zero" by Michael Asher. Asher is a former member of the Regiment who is fluent in Arabic and experienced in the Middle East. He managed to get into Iraq while Hussein was still in power and follow the trail of the B2O patrol, talking to the locals who compromised the patrol, the taxi driver, etc. The book is quite interesting, and it deconstructs the McNab version in a major way (McNab called it "infuriating"). McNab appears to have fabricated some of the most dramatic moments in his account, like the dramatic firefight at the hide site, and the shootout when the taxi they hijacked stopped at the checkpoint. However, the book is not out to disparage or diminish the bravery of the soldiers or their actual accomplishments. I'd also recommend "Eye of the Storm" by Peter Ratcliffe, who was RSM during the Gulf War. He makes some interesting observations on the B20 planning process, and also on Chris Ryan's apparent fabrications in his book "The One That Got Away." |

I saw the movie too. And was quite surprised that an elite unit like the SAS would have so much trouble. Like the wrong radios! wouldn't it be common practice to check out your equipment first? Then they landed in the wrong place, the chopper didn't show up at the pickup point. Kind of makes me wonder about our own Special Forces. |
