Let's get a thread going on this. I finished up the first half of season 5 last week, and I'm still amazed at how much I love this show. What do you guys think of it?

Pretty common knowledge it is the top rated show on TV, and widely popular here.

Yeah, I came to here discuss it with gun nuts though.

Walt is a sympathetic villain. His character is presented from the persepctive of the protagonist so we get to know what makes him tick. We understand why he begins cooking and we can identify with his motivations at first. As the tale unfolds, we begin to realize that Heisenberg is who Walt really is. He's always been the badguy he's just kept it hidden away and mostly from himself. He's hidden it all away behind his job, his family, his car...

Yes, everyone can sympathize with Walt's motivations and desires because it's a safe vicarious thrill to do so.

Took me a few episodes to get a feel for it, but it is now one of my all time favorite shows.   By the 3rd season it was a roller coaster of suspense every 10 minutes.  The characters that really draw you in are Walt of course, and Jessie and Gus.

The one's I could do without are his wife, as stated above, and the sister in law. Hank's wife is unnecessary and she annoys me.

I dunno... just my opinion so far,  Season 4 could have ended it perfectly.  Unless the last half of season 5 blows me away, I'll probably forget it exists.

I take it as this:  Walt was willing to do "whatever it takes" to make sure his family was financially sound. Even if "whatever it takes" meant sacrificing himself - not to death necessarily, but to evil.  He would become the bad guy if he had to.

The ending of season 4 was perfect in my opinion.  When Season 5 started up, it was almost a new story line involving the same characters.

The only loose end I can think of is Hank.  And he was already on the trail of Gus as the blue meth cook, he could have assumed the cartel (or remnants of it) had him killed.

As an aside - the way the story of Tuco, the old man, Gus, and the cartel boss tied together was pure brilliance.

Except for Walt going with "whatever it takes" is just an excuse. Walt is a badguy and always has been. He just couldn't nut up for it until he had literally nothing to lose. His family is also not his driving motivator, they're the lie he tells himself so he doesn't have to acknowlege what he is. He's still having some trouble with that whole nut up thing in this regard.

I have to disagree with you; though the end of season 4 presented Walt with the perfect chance to walk away and return to his life, season 5 shows his dependency on the only real love he has left: cooking meth. The man's career is over, his marriage has dissolved into a loveless business agreement, his son is indifferent to his existence, and the company that he started and then left is now worth billions. Walt now sees his legacy as being the head of something.  The posters for season 5 even suggest this with their sig line of "All hail the king".

I think the series was always intended to be about Walt's rise from a dull, boring, nobody who missed the train to greatness into someone who had achieved something insurmountable (even if it was only in his own mind).  This feeling of greatness goes to his head, and he becomes greedy; he is no longer really interested in the money (though that was the whole intent of him breaking bad); he is interested in being on top. He feels that he still has something to prove, having left grey matter while his former best friend has gone on to great success and recognition, while he scratched out a meager existence.  The evil was always meant to consume Walt, I foresee it costing him everything. It may not kill him, but it will leave him with nothing to show for all his efforts in the end.

The first half of season 5 showed that Walt abandoned his last ties to the man he once was.  He is now pure evil, consumed by this selfish desire to be on top of the world, even if it destroys him and everything he once loved.  I think the second half of season 5 will end one of two ways: the fall kills everyone, including Walt; or the fall kills everyone BUT Walt, leaving him with noting but the knowledge that his greed destroyed his life.

I've been wondering for a while, if he'll kill Hank. I could see something like that happening, or him backing off and getting arrested, showing that he has some "humanity" left.

I've wondered the same thing.

As to the end of season 4, I think it would have been fitting to leave it to the viewer to decide whether they thought Walt would mend things with Skylar and return to a normal life, or keep pursuing his rise to greatness.  I guess I like infinite cliff hangers.

The mid-season cliff hanger is more evidence that I think they're reaching for story line.

That book was never seen before... If it was that pivotal to the plot we should have seen it given to him, or seen him with it, or something. Anything.
