| Well, I work in a machine shop and I just dropped a 40lb plate of steel upright on the arch of my foot, I'm getting bruising on the side of my food and near my toes, and a good deal of swelling. Now, yes I motherfucked up and down when it hit, but I'm currently standing and walking on it. My co-worker says if it was broken I wouldn't be walking on it, and I have heard that many times when I have broken bones before. To me, a broken bone sucks, but it's tolerable, why do people always associate broken bones with unbearable pain? |

My wife walked with two broken bones in her foot. ER said it was not broke. A week later her PCP told her if the ER said it was not broke, it was not broke.
Two weeks after the incident she went to a podiatrist and he X-rayed it again. It was broke. You can walk on a broken foot. You can talk and eat with a broken jaw also. I did for 2.5 days.

Did not lose any teeth from it. An 80lb cable lasher was dropped on my head from 20 something feet up. broke my jaw (compound fracture, mandible broke out in front of my ear), fractured my skull, and messed up some nerves in my left arm. Quoted:

Jesus Christ, coumpount fractures scare the shit out of me. |
| My grandmother broke a bone in her foot when she slipped on a stairway in our house. She was watching after my brother and I for 6 weeks and walked on it the whole time. At one point it was so swollen she could barely put a shoe on. She refused to see a doctor until my father returned and forced her to go. |
| I was once in a somewhat minor car accident, the airbag went off into my hand, and my hand was sore and numb, but I thought it was just because the airbag had bruised my hand, and that I would be fine. Later I found out that I had broken one of my hand finger bones. |

Maybe you can go on disability? Seems all the rage these days! Just kidding. I'd say 90% of x-rays show nothing wrong. If you want it checked out go get an x-ray ![]() So, say the bone is broken, is there much they will do for a broken metatarsal? Wrap it up and slap me on the ass, or could there be more serious things involved? |

I dropped my Harbor Freight motorcycle lift table on top of my foot similarly about two weeks ago. Right on top of the arch. That thing weighs about 200 lbs. Some bruising and discomfort, but not much. Breaking your foot is some seriously painful shit. I think if you broke it, you would likely be in a bit more pain. Good luck with that. |

I broke a finger and they just dummy taped it to the one next to it. Not sure about a toe. |

Oh it definitely sucked/sucks, but I was raised with the, "grit your teeth and walk it off fucker, you still have the other one!" Catch phrase from my brother. |

It's the arch just behind my big toe on the inside of my foot, I would send a pic, but I'm sure Arfcom doesn't want to see my foot. |

Eh, they'd wrap it up ACE wrap and put you in a post op shoe (assuming your foot wasn't severely deformed and super painful). I wouldn't get an x-ray unless I was limping bad and it wasn't improving. I have a hard head though and my ER copay is $100.....Even though I work in the ER

Does it look something like this? That is what happens when your Muay Thai doesn't hold the pads correctly and you deliver a full speed kick to their elbow. http://www.afterhourtechs.com/misc/foot.jpg Not yet, it happened about an hour ago, the bruising is slowly spreading though. |
|
I broke my right arm when I was younger, I do not remember the break hurting just the fall and hitting the ground and getting the wind knocked out of me.
I broke my foot during boot camp and didn't even realize until I went to BAS after the crucible. Breaks are not really that painfull unless they are compound fractures. |

Had a patient run almost a block with an obviously broken tib/fib. He was in a video poker place when a robber came in and popped off a round into the ceiling. Patient ran out the door, tripped and fell, broke his leg and got back up to run to a gas station downthe street. X-ray was nasty. |

Ok. It will be there tomorrow. It takes a little while for the blood from bruising to pool in the toes. My toes felt fine, the small red rash on the top middle of the foot is where I hit. A basic x-ray didn't show that I broke anything. However when the weather changes that spot of my foot starts to hurt. |

I'm pretty sure I win the ugliest foot contest but you win the most pain and bruising contest. Once the swelling went down my foot didn't really hurt. Three years later it started bothering. I don't think there is much that you can do for it other than ice for the swelling and keep as much weight off of it as possible. |

There are a shitload of little bones in the foot.
Dropping heavy shit on the foot will break them, and still not hamper mobility, and just hurt like a bastard, until later. Been there, done that, when I was on the Gun line as an 0811, and fuck all if I haven't done the same later, doing stupid shit. Get the thing X-rayed, and taken care of properly. Those stupid little bones all work together, and if they stitch wrong, they just create problems down the road. It's worth the lost time backlash bullshit, in the long run. Put Ice to it now, and get to the Doc. Mangled feet suck in your 50's... Good luck! |

If you're a doctor, get a refund on med school. Pain depends on the break, location, and other factors. Saying only open fractures hurt is completely incorrect. I say this as a doc and as someone who has had multiple broken bones. Currently recovering from an unstable spiral fibula fracture that required plates & screws. My tibia fracture and compartment syndrome many years ago were no cakewalk either. OTOH, I've put my foot in a fluoroscope to verify that I had indeed snapped a metatarsal. Yep. Kept walking and working, and rebroke the same one several months later against the same spot under my kitchen counter. |

I'm walking on a toe broken in 2 places that needs surgery to ever bend again. But the ortho and myself took no time at all in determining we're not monkeys who use our feet to climb, so it's pointless. Anyway, point being.....stop listening to your coworkers who work in a machine shop about medical anecdotes. Do as you deem necessary. If it's your actual foot and not just a toe, it's more important to get looked at. Especially since you are on your feet regularly. Your future comfort depends on it. |
