I am picking the brains of all my favorite techies, so I thought I'd ask here too.
Questions: Is VPS hosting worth it for a bare bones domain that really just supports email accounts and a basic web site (not e-commerce), or should I just stick with shared hosting? Any recommendations on vendors? Background: My primary holding company's business domains is now mostly a shell (it's been a rough few years), and we use the domain mostly for email because I don't want to change the email addresses I've used for years. The domain is hosted on a well known shared hosting service that is cheap but has been having increasingly consistent quality issues. The latest straw to break my back is another failure after they did some server maintenance to correctly file reverse DNS lookup, so our sending MTA reputation stinks and our domain email is getting blocked by receiving servers (checked with cisco support and they confirmed the cause is on our end, and helped diagnose). Our hosting provider is being useless at helping and says correct reverse DNS lookup is not included in our package. They also can't seem to help with massive amounts of SPAM. I think my only choice is to walk from our multi-year discounted contract, and spend a little bit more with a different hosting partner. I don't want to spend much more, but I can't take certain our users (including me) having these problems. It blocked an important email to LaRue! I looked at DreamHost and HostGator, both highly ranked by PCMag, ZD, and a couple of other rankings, but then started looking and for a few more dollars I could get VPS service. Any recommendations or advice? |

I'm always a fan of VPS, maximum amount of control. Downside, you actually have to know what you're doing. Upside, you're not sharing an IP address with god only knows who, and lord only knows what they're doing; hence your reputation issue.
It's also not near as expensive these days. Check out OVH for Linux based VPS's on the cheap. |
