Ive come to the decision I dont want an AR-15 unless I build it from scratch. Handguns, a nice long gun and a battle rifle have served me well so far. Anyway, what are some common pitfalls/problems I should look out for? Basically Im just gonna do a assload of research about which bolt is the best, which upper is the best etc. Are there any well known compatibility problems with certain companies/parts? |

Quoted: There are a lot of people who specifically do not read the GD forum. True that. And those people usually have alot more experience than the over average GD poster. I warn you, they expect alot nicer treatment and don't put up with BS. So...BE NICE!![;)] Sgtar15 |

I just did a similar thing. I bought a complete upper from one of our members and a complete lower from Al's Custom and put the 2 together. I now have a DPMS forged lower, an FN upper with a Colt barrel. I'm happy with it. Actually, the project started as a possible ARFCOM fund raiser. I offered ARFCOM money if the membership could donate enough parts to build a complete A2. Not enough interest, so I went the other route. FOR THE MOST PART, IMHO, just about all the parts out there are OK. Sure, some are better than others, but the margin of difference really isn't much. A lot of it is pot luck. I've had a couple spendy barrels that couldn't shoot, and a couple el-cheapos that shot like a house on fire. Also, generally speaking, all parts are interchangable. However, I'd go with a complete bolt/ bolt carrier group from a single manufacturer. One common pitfall is getting carried away with trying to get the 'best' of everything. Define 'best'. Most accurate? Most durable? A Krieger barrel is supposidly VERY accurate, the match boys love 'em. But they don't last very long, say 3500-5000 rounds. OTOH, a Colt chrome lined barrel will last almost 10x that long, but it won't be as accurate. Still, the chrome lined bbl will probably shoot better than most shooters. Speaking of Colt, Avoid them. I heard somewhere that they have been using different pin sizes which means that replacing them can become a PITA. BTW, how far do you want to go as far as building your own goes? Some time ago, there was a thread posted about building your own lower. Interesting if you're hell bent on going the whole way. If you're hell bent on building your own, try a DPMS kit. Although they don't guarentee their kits, I'm pretty certain that they will help you if you run into a snag. DPMS is without a doubt the best in customer service of any manufacturer of ANY consumer good I've ever bought. Actually, I'd just buy a complete rifle from DPMS. Di I think they make the 'best' rifle? Probably not, but customer service means something. It's like being #2. They try harder. Talk to the match boys, they can give you the details if accuracy is your game. good luck, but don't get too anal about this 'which is best' business or you'll never finish the project. |

When I say "best" I mean most durable. Im more interested in having the complete package last forever then be super accurate. I dont want to put together the trigger group and such, Ill buy a complete lower. A off the top of my head list of things I want to pick and choose: barrel, bolt, upper, complete lower and stock. Ill buy a complete bolt I dont want to put one of those together either lol. |
