Someone offered me a crossbow stock they had started on if I would complete the project.

I dont have a ton of details yet, but apparently it was a kit at one time and most of the parts were lost as were the instructions.

The thing is a 400# pull, using a leaf spring out of a car.

Anyone have any idea where I would be able to find parts?

400LB?!

No wonder those things can fire bolts so far!

400LB's is insane..

I would stay away unless you want to get yourself killed.

I would suggest you google homemade crossbows.

Just about everyone bought a kit from a Kansas company to build a cross bow of around 100 pounds back when I was in high school.  That's hard enough to cock, a 400 pound bow will require a winch.

What can go wrong?

400 lbs?

That's not a crossbow, it's a ballista.

We are going to need pictures.  And details.  More details.

Romans considered anything you couldn't pull back by yourself to be a form of artillery, even if you did it by yourself with a lever or a tool.

A 400# pull would probably be considered a Scorpion or a light Ballistae.

LOL leaf spring of a car?! holy SHIT

This is almost as crazy as making a PIAT from a garage door spring!

Snap a string/wire and have the other end wrap itself around your neck?

Part of why I am looking for the original plans to even see if I want to complete it.

I remember reading about a arbalest kit in the '80s based off of a car leaf spring cocked with a bicycle crank/chain/reduction gearing.

I also remember lusting after the Barnet Commando crossbow  in the mid '80s Sharper Image catalog.

I had a teacher in high school that owned a cross bow powered by a leaf spring.  It was basic and had to be propped up to shoot due to weight.

There are a few free plans floating around the internet for 100 pound class crossbows, but 400 pounds is a step up requiring good connections and hardware.  A stock is barely a good start on this project; if you start sketching the rest of the parts needed, you'll see what I mean.
