My sammich maker has finally decided that she needs a ccw. What do y'all recommend? What does your wife/girlfriend carry?

Obligatory pic of wife for the leg humpers.

My wife has a Sig 238 Lady.  I was embarrassed to pick it up from FFL but she likes it.

Sig 938. 9mm SAO and the heavier slide makes it much easier to rack then the more predominately polymer guns like a PF9 or LC9. My wife could barely manipulate the Keltec PF9 slide and can do the 938 without any effort. The SAO trigger is easier for her to make consistent hits even out to 25yds.

My wife finds the grip too thick on the double stack XDs.  I'm thinking of getting her an XDS in 9mm.

Might I suggest a Sig p239 single-stack 9mm?

Also, you're a lucky man.

If she doesn't shoot a lot, I suggest a wheel gun. The size is right, .38 is manageable, and it will work.

Smith 442/642.

ETA:  You obviously need to gauge her interest in what she sees as a realistic option to carry. A lot of women aren't going to be too excited about jamming a mid-frame + comptac in their pants and hopping in the car. If you can keep the size of the pistol reasonable for her purse, she's a lot more likely to bring it with her.

My wife prefers Glock 19.

My wife CCW's a Kahr P380 (loaded w/Buffalo Bore +P 100gr hardcast) but also has a SIG P250sc in .380 as her range/nightstand gun. The SIG is much easier/pleasant for her to train with but the Kahr is significantly smaller/lighter for carry.
Let her try as many different pistols as you can and let *her* decide what she likes as it's better for her to have something (regardless of caliber/capacity, even if it's only a .22) that she likes and feels confident with than a handcannon she doesn't like and won't practice with.

My wife has a 642, but the snappy recoil with +P rounds kept her from shooting it much. She's shot the heck out of her Sig P238 though. Let her shoot whatever you have, and take her somewhere that rents a variety of handguns. She'll find something she likes.

What ever she can fit well in and shoot well with but try to keep it in the centerfire category and above a .380

My wife carries an LCP.

She shoots it very well.  It fits her hand perfectly, and it disappears when she carries it IWB.  I think it's a fantastic carry gun for women.  Every girl that has shot it loves it.

What we think of as having more recoil, I've found, is mitigated a lot by fitting smaller hands a lot better.  I can't stand shooting the damn thing, but my wife will shoot it all day long, and without any complaints. *shrug*

Thanks for all the responses so far. We're gonna have to try out a few different weapons and see what she likes best.

I'll probably start her out with my G19 and go from there.

Also, she's sort of a girly girl, so she'll probably like something pink. Either from the factory or coated afterwards.

Mine has a Springfield EMP in 9mm. 1911 battery of arms, 9 rounds, and amazingly pleasant to shoot. Heavy but that's a trade off. Oh, and it's super sexy.

She also needs to consider how she wants to carry it. I have a Keltec P3AT and a CZ75. I carry the P3AT in my purse everywhere, and occasionally carry it IWB. The CZ is my house gun and is in my nightstand.

I don't like shooting the Keltec, but I have done it enough that I'm comfortable with it. Anything bigger is too heavy for my purse and can't be concealed IWB without wearing really baggy tshirts. I'm too vain for baggy shirts all the time.

Mine found a G-19 to be her CCW. Yours will need to figure out what fits and works best herself. Beyond picking the firearm training is the key, firearm safety and handling along with marksmanship are what most folks think about, but there should also be training on mindset of CCW and tactics of personal protection, my wife spent a week at Gunsite and I will say today she has all the pieces in place we now go shoot weekly working on it all.

My GF settled on a 9mm Shield.  We tried all sorts of different guns.  She hated Glocks, wasn't fond of the snub nose 38's.  The Berreta 92 she liked, but its too big to carry for her.
The Shield woked well.

Very pretty lady.

Have her shoot several different guns and see what she feels comfortable with.  Also consider how large her hands are, whether she has arthritis, how much recoil bothers her, etc.

Although I'm a Glock fan......I would NOT recommend a Glock for any new shooter and if you have been around for any length of time you know why.

Try something in a DA ONLY.....or a wheel gun of your flavor to carry and use until experience is gained.

STRESS her under fire (even a timer) will work initially but if she is going to CCW then her life and yours might depend upon the training she gets. Make sure it is good realistic training and not just standing at a bench "test firing" different guns at a paper target.

Women can carry a wide variety of weapons easily depending upon outfit and build. This is both a blessing and curse. The curse side is that they have to be VERY competent with that wide variety of weapons first.  A "safe action" handgun is NOT a newbie gun.

Advice given for what you paid.

I thought this also, until I put one in the hands of my 24 yo daughter.  She has small hands and did not feel she had a good grip.  The width of the double stack magazine was too much.  She did not like the G19 at all.

Going to try the S&W Shield and Springfield XDS next.

Try a Kahr K9. Nice hand filling grip, all steel for recoil control. Not too big, not too small. Nice smooth double action pull. DO NOT get her the K40.
