CMP receoved my order for a Springfiel Garand 1/26/09.  The time frame at that point was quoted at 60 days.  So I call today to check the status and am told "Your order will be processed for shiping next week, but.....the Sprngfields will go on backorder and it will be another 2-3 months wait."

I say "You gotta be fucking kidding!" So now, they may give me a HRA if they are "In stock" when they process my order.  This would ship in 2-3 weeks.  Ammo is now a 100 day wait. How does the CMP go "Out of stock" anyhow?  Seems if you have the products already there (IE: surplus arms and ammo) you could hire the additional staff needed to process orders.

They go on backorder because of a backlog of sorting, processing, inspecting, cleaning, etc, etc.

Also, the current backlog can't really be helped.  From what I've read on the CMP forums, they don't have the physical room for another soul in their shipping department.

I'm just glad I placed a rather steep order for HXP before the price increase.

ORDER BACKLOG. Normally, we average receiving 2,000 - 3,000 sales orders per month and ship an order in 2-3 weeks. However, these are not normal times. Since October, 2008 we have been receiving 5,000 - 10,000 orders per month, which is several times normal. As a result, we are very backlogged and running several weeks behind on processing orders. Our staff is working up to 12 hours per day 7 days a week, and only today finished the 4,000 orders we received on 1 December alone (except for those 1 Dec orders with credit card or other problems). Customers with outstanding orders should expect orders to ship approximately 100 days from the date the order was received by CMP. We expect to recover from this surge in another 3-4 months (assuming the number of orders being received drops somewhat).

Good thing you didn't try to get one 15 years ago when the orders took 12-24 months. You sent your money along with all the other paperwork, they sent a confirmation letter and you waited. No updates, no projected ship dates and they wouldn't even talk to you until your order was at least 12 months old. These were the years when they were only allowed to release 600-1000 Garands  per year except for the 2 years where they only had 1 armorer (the Army transferred out the others). I think they only released 50-100 Garands those years. No choice in what you got, no condition selection. You got whatever happened to be processed, tested, and packed when your order came to the top of the pile.

But, then again, my Winchester was only $125, and 2 years later, my Dad's Springfield was $165, both in excellent condition.

The HRA's are normally a bit nicer finish.  If I had to choose between a Springfield and HRA, I would get the HRA.

Wow... and a pretty steep increase at that. I am glad I placed the rest of my planned CMP ammo orders beforehand.

I sent my order in last year for a SG M1 HRA (between Christmas and the New Year) I got my rifle on 3-30-09.

Yes, it took some time.  But, such is life.

And..........I e-mailed them (3-30-09) about some broken/damaged parts.

Guess what?

I got the replacement parts today (4-03-09).

Aloha, Mark

PS........back in the DCM days............you only got one rifle for life and you couldn't ask for a specific maker.  That was truely, "luck of the draw."

The CMP is swamped with orders.

The folks at the CMP are pretty nice people. Just be patient and work with them, and you'll end up with a nice rifle.

Delayed gratification is not a trait of this generation.

100 days??  OH MY GOD.  I can't wait that long.  What will I do?

I've had a shotgun at my 'smith, who is also a good friend.  He has had it for a year and a half.  I'll get it back when it's done.

Prior to the CMP's charter, I got my first M1 when they were the DCM and you got ONE only for life. It was 20 months and a couple wake up's before it arrived.

Exactly. I just sent off an order for a SG IBM M1 Carbine. It will arrive when it arrives. I'm just happy there is such a great program like this still in existance.

OP, The CMP is facing the same incredible increase in orders that all of the other venders of ammunition and firearms are facing. The CMP does a very credible job and works as quickly as possible. If you cannot accept the situation, then call and cancel the order. Try looking at one of the gun shows for a rifle, I can assure you that you will find a seller that will be glad to accommodate the I want it all and I want it now attitude you seem to have.
Of course you will pay several hundred dollars more for the same rifle that you could buy from the directly from the CMP. Good luck with it.
