Watching it now.
Honestly there are parts of it that are great. Love the guns and the humor but there is something about it that makes it fall flat on it's face. |

Quoted:
Amy is annoying the laser communication plot made no sense. tim curry's character was.....odd the main male and female lead are bad and the sets were pretty terrible looking. the african revolution scene at the airport was the only plausible part of the story. |
SPHERE was one of my favorite books when I was a kid, and they managed to absolutely fuck the movie version into a cocked hat.
Michael Crichton wrote some good books, but only Jurassic Park survived Hollywood's temptation to concentrate on the technology aspect and halfass the character development. |

It had Dylan Walsh in it, for starters. I despise the guy's performances.
Ernie Hudson and Joe Pantoliono stole every scene they were in, as did Delroy Lindo. "The Kigani have HAD IT, and they're eating people!" "I'm black, I should have luggage on my head.." "Don't want nobody peeking..." |

Can you explain to me how what amounts to a laser out of James bond could be used for communication? Though space based laser communications to earth are hampered by weather/cloud cover. A work in progress. ETA: Fiber uses lasers, though through a different medium. |

Michael Crichton wrote some good books, but only Jurassic Park survived Hollywood's temptation to concentrate on the technology aspect and halfass the character development. But I disagree with you about Jurassic Park. Spielberg turned it into a fucking Spielberg kiddie movie. In the book, the guy that created the park (with its resulting body count) ended up being eaten by the critters he created. In the movie, he gets off the island with just a "Welp, that was a bad idea -- let's go home". Of course, everyone in that movie was annoying, especially the kids. Spielberg's spiel was even worse in the second movie. It was like "Michael is an OK author, but I'm a GENIUS. Watch THIS". |

Sphere got totally fucked. And Congo sucked just as bad. But I disagree with you about Jurassic Park. Spielberg turned it into a fucking Spielberg kiddie movie. Sphere, Congo, Jurassic Park, Lost World are all classics. |

Hated Congo and Sphere - great books. I thought Eaters of the Dead was a good movie (13th Warrior) Never read Westwood, but enjoyed the Yule Brenner movie. Did Andromeda Strain get made into a movie? I liked a lot of Crichtons books. Not many made it well in film. JP was close I thought. Hollywood seems to always want to mess with the original. |

I thought it was pretty good until they discover the hidden area where the apes resided. Those sets look cheap/low budget. And the CGI apes didn't look very good/realistic. That was the same complaint that I had for the movie "Legend" with Will Smith. I hated Legend because all of the mutants were CGI and bad CGI at that. It was like watching a cartoon instead of a live action movie.

As I kid, I thought I read everything Crichton wrote (followed by everything Michener wrote, but I digress).
But, first time I heard of Jurassic Park was when the movie came out. Still haven't read it. I did read Lost World after I saw Jurassic Park, though. Agreed, the Sphere movie was too Michael Bay, nowhere near enough Stanley Kubrick. |
