CPU Utilization Very High - Why, Fix?
I've been checking a lot of my PC's, even ones at work, because what WAS blazingly fast machines have all slowed to a crawl. This behavior is so prevalent, it is almost the new normal. The thing is, none of these machines used to be like this. Up until a year or two ago, when unused, the CPU was quiescent. The machines were fast. I feel as if software is running on my machine that I do know about and I want it to stop. The machines are running W7 and W10 - it happens on both operating systems. When I open Task Manager, I see CPU utilization percentages that are very high - the equivalent of 1 CPU being used 100%. Of course, this causes the machine to be laggy. You can see Memory utilization going up and down, more or less in synch with CPU activity. To me, this means programs are loading, running and then shutting off. You can see Network traffic associated with some of the CPU and memory activity. Again in Task Manager, I see svchost.exe is running and using a large portion of the CPU but no description of what program is invoking svchost. I have tried to use End Process in Task Manager to no avail. Any ideas on what is causing this and how I can get back to normal??? |

It is fixed! I searched for 1 1/2 years looking the right "switch to flip". Now, it's done. Thank you.
I have several other computers to fix but it is an easy thing to do. For Windows 7, here's what I got out of the link you posted and several sub-tier links from there: 1. Temporary but instantaneous fix that frees up your computer Open "Task Manager" using <ctrl>+<alt>+<del> Select "Services" tab. Find and right click on "wuauserv" Select "Stop Service" then do this: Permanent fix that precludes the problem. Open "Windows Update" from the start menu. Open the Settings/Options menu and select "Never update..." Reboot the computer When you reboot, wuauserv will restart but will not cause any further trouble, so, allowing it to run will be okay. If you want to update Windows, do it manually using Windows Update. There's a button called, "Update Now" (or some such). THANKS, AGAIN. |
