I've been on my current route for a year now. There's a nursing home on the route that called today to have a package picked up. All it said was "pick up at frt desk". So I drive up and park at what looked like the main entrance. Get buzzed in through the door and right inside is a sweet probably 80 something year old lady in a wheelchair.

She asked me if I could take her with me, holding out her hand. I thought she was joking around, lots of people ask that. I told her I wished I could.. She started crying, put her hand on my arm, and said, "No please.. please get me out of here, I beg you, please.."

Broke my heart.

I'm drinking too much tonight

The attempted escape! What else?!

ETA:  Sad sad situation I feel a little bad joking about it.  Going to call my grandmother in the morning early just to tell her how much I love her.

Yeah, nothing to report I don't think. It's a nice facility by all appearances. She was dressed nicely.

I just got the feeling that she hated being there, just wanted... out. Certainly crossed my mind that perhaps no one visits her, calls... Very possible that she has Alzheimer's or something, but didn't strike me as such.

And it just reinforced my feelings that I don't want to end up in such a place, no matter how nice it might be.

Made my heart ache for her, you know?

Maybe, or maybe she is just senile and unhappy not being at "home"
My bet would be on the latter

One of the inmates was trying to escape, eh?

Nursing homes are sad places.

I have very bad memories of my father-in-law calling out my name and begging me to take him with us (kinda weird since my wife, his daughter, and I were walking out together and he called to me). I can't say we were very close, but I did a lot with the old guy in his old age. Took him shooting a lot, even took him to a titty bar for his birthday once.

FWIW, he was NOT being mistreated at the home. He just REALLY did not want to be there. He had late stage Parkinson's and kept falling, his wife could not pick him up, so he had to be where he could be cared for and us living 700 miles away, caring for him was not an option.

Just thinking about him calling me still weirds me out after nearly a decade.

ETA:
Yes a person with Parkinson's can shoot quite well from the bench with the right technique. His last .22 targets were Necco wafers at 35 yards. Not a cut, but with Parkinson's every trigger break is a surprise.

I don't know how they can deal with it. Professional detachment I suppose. Same as Dr.'s, nurses and such. I just couldn't do it...

No offense meant towards Elliot's chick, but my general experience with nursing home staff is that they are bottom of the bucket healthcare individuals that got canned for being inept from other centers, and have about zero to none on the scale of patient care.

I'm sure there cases that are different, but that has been my general experience.

Could you visit her again?

My grandparents are in a home right now. I can't do anything about it. I wish I could.

No, won't be going in there again. I was at the wrong entrance when I met the lady. It's a large-ish home / rehab facilty. I don't think I could take anything like that again without just breaking down.

So, no..

Sounds like somebody missed his shot at a GILF.

Not why.. I did ask her "what's wrong?".. She just kept ... weeping, I guess.. and saying "take me with you, get me out..."

Hurt my soul.

I've experienced things like this before... I've had family in homes.. but never such a plea to get me out of here..

I dont think there are many ' lifers' working in nursing homes. That kind of stuff is hard on the soul.
