How long can a CV joint last when it starts clicking when turning?  And what is the final outcome if left unfixed?  re:95 Corolla

It may last as little as a month or as long as a year.  When it finally breaks, the best-case scenario is that the axel will turn but not the wheel, which means the car won't be drivable.  Worst-case is that it breaks while the car is in motion, gets caught, and tears up a bunch of stuff.

Having the boots replaced every 5 years (whether they appear to need it or not) is much cheaper in the long run than replacing axels, though in most cars, they are actually pretty easy to replace.

It will start grinding next and sooner or later you will turn the wheel, give her some gas and it'll pop. Of course it'll be somewhere in BFE as that is normal. Remember, the seal is probably broken, most of the grease has blown out and what is left is now a nice paste of dust dirt and gunk. Just buy a rebuilt axleshaft, they are cheap and pretty darn easy to install. Most of the time they are much easier to do then the CV joint anyways.
