After a fair amount of planning, more than a great deal of time searching for the right car to turn into a dedicated track car (track:  the kind with turns) - I finally located the right car to get started.  It was in California - which is only the opposite coast from me.  So some good vetting needed to be done after I had a conditional deal in place with the seller.  I had a thorough pre-purchase inspection done by a respected shop - including an oil sample (shipped off to Blackstone for oil analysis) and a compression test.  Good results on each with some minor PPI findings.

So I flew out to LA, drove up to meet the seller, test drove the car and completed the deal.  I considered driving it back - but 4 days of solid driving wasn't that appealing - so.....

Ready to load!

The trip from left coast to right coast would be about 9 days on the same truck, dropping off cars to specific customers along the way (and picking up others headed west for the trip back).

This thread will document the transition from street car to - to a dedicated track car with emphasis on my specific preferences and how I like things.

Which car you ask?

C5 Z06 is hard to beat - affordable and loads of aftermarket support and used parts around.

Oh, and fast as hell when properly built and setup.

Best car right now for dedicated track build.. until people realize the deal a C5 is and the prices rise.

Hoping Viper or 911...

Given he is paying for oil analysis I am thinking something more high strung tho, looking for bearing of valve seal material perhaps.

Spec miata is pretty competitive......  even in solo racing a good driver in a miata is impressive.

Whatever it is, it must be be rare and probably old or he wouldn't have gone thru the hassle of buying one on the opposite coast and doing the oil and compression test.

Truer words have never been spoken.  I've seen guys to the point of hysterics for wrecking their rather expensive, financed Porsche.

And no, most insurance policies do not cover track use.

Good point, talked to a dude last year who put a McLaren 650S into the wall out in California to the tune of $90k.

Although... I'm really wanting to take my M4 to a track day. Don't want to get into anything bumper to bumper or door to door, just track time with someone telling me how to do it better.

Do an HPDE with your local BMWCCA or PCA chapter.  You'll get all that done in a solid and well-run event.

My insurance company covers HPDEs (as long as it isn't a "timed" or "racing" event). Before that, I used Lockton once for a track weekend - not cheap. Need pics!

Guessing... Lotus? Caterham? Radical? Better not be a Cayman GT4...

I have insured race cars for competition events.  Last time, it was a rental ride in my same class that was being used out of the country.  Send along my competition license, copy of the entry form and logistics information.  Oh, and a fat check.  Was much, much cheaper than if I had to go out of pocket if I balled up my buddy's car...

Can't be a Vet.  Dime a dozen and no need to grab one from the left coast.  With flight, hotel and shipping you're in for 3k right there.

So kinda rare.

I'm a Viper guy, but you're not.  So I doubt that's it, though they are rare enough, especially if looking for certain mods.

No, you like the foreign stuff.  Exposed to plenty locally... this one is special.   I'm thinking Japanese.... maybe grey market model...
