My HDTV/DVR has a USB out on the back of the box.  Can a computer be hooked up to it to record the recorded shows from the DVR?  If so, what software is needed?

Who makes the box?  If you can't tell, who is your provider?

If it is Motorola, Click here, pick your box and you can download the manual.  It tells you about the USB.  Mine is inactive.

Look at the link in my previous post. You can download the manual and it tells you all sorts of cool stuff.

All sorts of cool stuff that Cox disables.

Most cable boxes have extra ports for "future use" in the case of Comcast anyway the extra ports are disabled as the extra features were not ordered when Comcast bought them.  There are hacks all over the net to enable and use some of the extra features.

I read through the manual and all I saw was a warning to not hook anything up to it unless you contact the provider first.  Pretty much answers nothing.  I have in the past heard that you can get a smart card and put the dvr info on it and then put it into your laptop.  Is this true.  I would like to figure out how to get the stuff I have recorded off onto a regular DVD.

If it has a firewire port (and active), you can record to your computer any non-encrypted content, commonly known as 5C encryption to your PC.  I use my SageTV box to record off of my STB and store on the PC's HDs.  I can record every channel that I subscribe to.  However, other people may only be able to record their local channels.  It all depends on the Cable Company.
