[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Cable Vs. Dish (Page 1 of 2)

Excuse me if this has been asked before but I just went from cable to the dish. Does the dish have any benefits over cable?

So far the picture seems clearer and it rocks in HD. I have not lost the signal during the last few storms that rolled through. After the last couple of hurricanes it took cable a couple of weeks to start broadcasting again.

When I had cable I always had problems with picture clarity, even in HD. The dish is cheaper than cable too.

Plus the porn is hardcore! So why is there sitll cable?

I prefer cable, but it is more expensive.

One of my favorite aspects of cable service is 'On Demand'. They haev a bunch of free programming On Demand, and quite a bit of it is in HD.

When my DirecTV contract expires, I am switching back to cable.

You are correct about the programming on demand. But I do not think that feature is enough to make me go back to cable.

Dish is good for out-of-cable-service areas, and if your cable provider sucks at maintainance...

In a hurricane prone area, you'll have shorter downtime if the storm doesn't eat your dish...

That said, Dish can't compete with cable in terms of internet/phone service...

So there is still cable...

But where my house is, there is no cable or broadcast - just dish...

With an internet link, you can download "On Demand" content to DirectTV recorders.
I've been using this feature for about 8 months now.

Neither.

I used DTV for years and was very happy with it except for the cost of using it for internet.  Also, the NFL ticket is over-priced and goes up EVERY year.

So...when I moved into town I switched to Charter.  What a clusterfuck.  Service is not nearly as reliable as dish...On Demand is down more often than it is available.

I worked at a company called Charleton Group, which does customer service work for Charter. I used to think that all the customers who bitched about cable were mostly "whiners" until I tried cable myself.

Cable is CRAP and we are switching back to DTV.

It has to be downloaded, but you can start watching after the first few % is complete. The list is freaking huge.  Much larger than the Comcast OD that I've seen.

I have cable because the Internet is the best deal around so I got TV as a package.  Overall I would have to say I prefer satellite or the U-verse I used to have to cable (at least Time Warner cable).  The cable company's box/DVR is a total POS compared to the other companies.

Yes

Cable is great if you like being overcharged and like piss poor service.

I just upgraded my old DirecTv Tivo recievers for their new HD DVR receivers.  They have On Demand in HD.  There is no comparison between the picture on my old receivers and the new HD receivers.  They also have an online scheduler to pick programs.  You just go to DirecTVs website, find the programs you want to watch and tell the website to have your unit record it.

The MediaShare, which uses the network to connect to WMP11 devices?
I have an older PC running XP and WMP11 and my HR21-700 can't seem to pull the media correctly.

I haven't tried that yet.  I have played with Joost and used to have computer based DVR running.

Right now I'm the only one in the house so why watch tv on a 22" monitor when I can watch it on a 50" plasma?

I've heard the media share works well, I've just never bothered with it.

That a big Problem in Vegas?

The only loss of service I had due to snow and ice was 9 days... when I had cable.

Cable down time is far higher than with DirecTV or Dish Network.

I've had both and have dish now. I think you get more for your money with satellite. Cable's too damned expensive, and BTW, don't believe all the hype about clouds blocking your signal. It happens occasionally, but not like the common myth would have you believe. Satellite technology has come a long way in recent years.

I am going back to cable. I get a lot of lost service with the dish, especially when the snow blows. Never had this problem with cable. Also Direct tv keeps raising my rates $10 every couple of months.

I live in rural New Mexico.  Cable doesn't come out here.  We've had Dish, but four years ago switched to DirecTv and never looked back.

DirecTv has always given us great service, both over the phone and in person.  I've lost signal about twice a year to snow, but I own a broom.  Fixed in 30 seconds flat!

Sometimes, we lose the signal in a real bad rain/thunderstorm.  BUt that's a couple times a year for 5-30 minutes.

Hell, I've even fot DirecTv out in my shop!

If the Dish is properly set up rain fade is rare… again with cable I had more down time than satellite, and I am not alone in this.

There is a reason satellite customers are significantly more satisfied with their satellite TV than cable customers are with cable TV… satellite is better and cheaper.
