Sometimes I eat at the restaurant upstairs in Whole Foods and watch ladies in yoga pants grocery shopping below.

In the South (and the homeland of old people), I'm sure you can, but not so much the Midwest these days.  I just drove twenty miles tonight to a small town restaurant to get my fix because you'd have a hard time finding that any closer to a big city.

The cafeteria restaurant that was open for decades here just closed its doors within the last year or two.
Heritage cafeteria. Ate there once as a kid with my grandparents. Old people loved that place up till it’s last day.
I think it was mostly some kind of nostalgia for them or taste loss with age because I remembered it sucking.
Like a sad attempt at a cross between school food and home cooking.

We called that the MediCare Lounge.

I remember Lubys and Morrisons from being a kid, but around here the locally-owned southern food meat & 3 cafeterias are where it's at. Hot water cornbread + jalapenos for the win.

C&H is awesome and I’m old. Gonna be 40 this year.

Country style steak with rice and gravy with a side of green beans.

I can't find any sit-down American home-style restaurants near me.  Always some crap like Applebees or TGIFridays - I just want something simple for an entree and three sides. maybe some pie.  A cafeteria would be an improvement over fuckin' Chipotle.

We had a K&W for years that closed up last year. I think COVID is what closed the doors since tons of elderly went there . It was always busy, but I liked J&S better, unfortunately it closed also.

My grandma use to manage a Bishop’s…no idea if any are around anymore.  I loved the mac & cheese, fried chicken, and chocolate moose pie.

Bryce’s was a fixture of my childhood. Whether we went inside and climbed the grand staircase, or walked in the kitchen from the alley for a to go order, I always knew that I would get a good meal. And dessert!  It lost the atmosphere when it moved, but I still went every time I was in town. Sad that it finally closed.  Luby’s and Furr’s could never compare.

Picadilly, and the Holiday House (the best buffet ever) were good and are sadly missed.

Somewhere like K&W is fine once in a while. Old people love it, it's cheap, and at least it gives convicts somewhere to work and bring their kitchen detail skills into the real world. Truly an ass for every seat.

The last time I patronized a cafeteria restaurant was Morrison's (Asheville NC) in the late 80's.

Buffets>Cafeterias

Cafeterias: they portion
Buffets: I portion!

As a field tech, we would hit Luby's on all you can eat day. Made for some sluggish  afternoon work days.

As a kid, they were called smorgasbord restaurants in my AO.

In our area we had K&W and S&W.  As far as I know they're all closed

We still have Jacksons in Gastonia though

Here is a trip down memory lane, S&W Cafeteria

20+ years ago there were a lot of buffet style places...mostly small, privately owned chinese or Indian food places.

There were a few of those chain places like Golden Coral on Hometown Buffet...but they seem to have all gone out of business. I never went to any of those.

As a kid we would go to Quincy’s and Ryan’s, but I haven’t seen one of either in years. S&S was a solid meal with my grandmama; the chopped steak was my go-to.

We still have a cafeteria style meat and three downtown that’s been there for like a million years. I eat there every couple of weeks since it’s around the corner from my office, but if I’m honest it’s mostly just slop. They have a few things that aren’t cooked to death. Luckily in the south we have no shortage of BBQ buffets, and they aren’t going anywhere. Closest thing to a traditional American cafeteria with actual home cooked food.

So much food has just gone hipster or fast casual/dressed up fast food these days. Chains have really killed a lot of America’s regional differences. Welcome to Costco, I love you.

"Meat, sir!"

I like the the J&S Cafeteria every once in a while that's in High Point. I don't mind the food at all - not slop, but not food I'd eat every day. Get a vegetable plate if you're concerned about your health.
