Alright guys, I need your opinions, yeah go figure...  I'm currently living in Georgia until I find out when I go to the Police Academy.  If I'm accepted, I'll go in April or July.  The PD says that July is when we'll go, but if the April class still has openings, I think I can talk them into lettin me go then.  I have been thinking about going out to Cali for a few months until I hear from them, just to experience the western US, among other personal reasons.  For all you Cali guys and gals out there, what's your opinions.  Is it worth goin out for a few months??

If you go, stay rural.  The cities have their heads so far up their asses, its unbelievable.

The country and rural areas are breathtaking.  Northern parts especially.  Watch out for Bigfoot.

I live 30 minutes from Yosemite. Over rated and too crowded.
I love the drive on 108 over the pass and the towards 395.
Lots of Marines training in the high elevations.
Very cool to see them up here.

I was stationed at Camp Pendleton for a while, at San Mateo, my barracks was only about 2 miles from the beach. I loved the environment and hated pretty much everything else. It's a beautiful, wonderful place, infested by morons...

I loved hiking/backpacking on the outskirts of Yosemite.I never went there during peak time, but I can understand why you might not like it.

I was hiking one day(outskirts) with a couple of my friends and it was raining,we were looking for an unreachable part of a river to fish.We ran across some 10th MTN Div (I think)training,we were way outside Yosemite and I can't remember exactely where we were, but it was cool.

No advice from me as to whether you come or not.

But if you are going to be in Northern California, try to get to wine country (Napa Sonoma Area)... I used to like the Mondavi winery (about 50 miles out of SF). You can also get to Lake Tahoe (there's gambling on the Nevada side). Some nice volcanic areas are Mono and Lassen. Truly beautiful beaches and wooded shore areas are in Humboldt. Point Reyes, north of SF is nice, too. San Francisco itself is a great tourist area (and if you're time is limited, a nice place to go for night life and dining). There used to be pretty nice fishing around the mouth of the Klamath River (Salmon, steelhead) a few miles south of Oregon, but I'm not sure they allow fishing there, anymore. Up and down the coast around Monterey is pretty nice.

If you are coming to Southern California, maybe rent bikes and bike from Marina del Rey to Santa Monica (North) or Marina del Rey to Redondo south. Abalone Cove in Palos Verdes has nice tide pools (limpets, abalone, sea urchins, anenomes, even planaria). Try to get to Catalina Island (it's about 26 mils off the coast. Take a ferry from San Pedro, LA's harbor, or Long Beach. There's a hotel there, off the beaten path, called something like Canyon Resort or something). One of the places I think is worth visiting is the Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens. For touristy stuff, Santa Monica is nice. If you arrive before April, some of the desert areas may be of interest to you (such as Death Valley). If you get down to San Diego (about 2 hrs south of LA), I like the Ocean Beach area for tourism.
