Calling all electrical engineers
I’m a Civil Engineer with an MSCE. I have a few old arcade games like ms pacman that I repair and tinker around with, I’ve done some repairs to the PCBs and so forth. Also, I’ve rebuilt a few monitors. The electronics of these machines fascinates me. I stare at these ICs like the caveman in the 2001 movie. What is the best way to learn electrical engineering of this type? What’s the shortcut? I heard there is a book called, “The art of electronics” that is very good. Any recommended texts? The goal would be to learn to design my own electronic circuits of this type. FWIW, I am a smart effer, did well in calculus, programming, numerical methods, etc. |

Im not aware of any "shortcuts" to a comprehensive understanding of electrical engineering theory.
Best bet might be to look into hobbist inventor groups. You could defintely meet up with other folks and pick their brains....get schematics for projects, find hookups for parts, etc. |

Nothing builds knowledge faster than hands-on experience. Pick an area of electronics that interests you (i.e., audio, ham radio, home automation, solar power, automotive accessories, etc.), start out with a simple project, and proceed to make it work. There are plenty of hobbyist magazines on the market - I'd recommend Nuts & Volts as a good start. |

A High voltage charge of up to 60,000 volts DC, or more depending on ht e voltage rating of the equipment being tested is applied and the rate at which it "leaks" of bleeds off gives an indication of the dielectric strength of the insulating material. Megging is done at lower voltages and checks mainly for short circuits or break downs in insulation. They bot are pretty much the same thing but the fist is usually at a mush higher voltage and is watched over time. As fa as "calculating" the internal impedance of a transformer do you mean based on windings/core configuration or based on full load and no load measurements? It would take a whole chapter of a text book to explain the first. Not much experience with NETA. They mainly just do testing and I trust them to do their job. I work for a power company and my specialty is power. Transmission line studies, fault current calculations, relaying/protection, load flows, stability in transmission networks, that kind of stuff. I more familiar with the IEEE Standards. |

If you want to learn digital electronics, there's still no better way than what I did back when Nixon was President - The TTL Cookbook by Don Lancaster.
Amazon Link I would also recommend The CMOS Cookbook and The IC Op-Amp Cookbook. Then all you have to do is find a good book on linear (not switching) power supplies and you're all set. |
