CAMDEN, N.J. - New Jersey's most impoverished
city will close all three branches of its public library at year's end
unless a rescue can be pulled off.

Camden's library board says
the libraries won't be able to afford to stay open past Dec. 31 because
of budget cuts from the city government. The city had its subsidy from
the state cut.

The library board president says the library
system, which opened in 1904, is preparing to donate, sell or destroy
its collections, including 187,000 books.

Board president Martin
McKernan says keeping the books around would pose a fire hazard.

Camden's
library system is not the only one having financial problems.  Fourteen
libraries in Queens cut weekend services earlier this year.

Makes sense.  Camden is a shithole of the highest order.

Will the closing be noticed?

No kidding. These are the things they need to close before police and fire.

Somehow, it will be the fault of lax Pennsylvania gun laws.

Why did Camden have any libraries?

Why would they consider destroying any part of the collection? Wouldn't that cost more than just leaving it?

Camden cannot be saved. There, I said it.

Never saw Earl Hickey crack open a book.  Crabman might have, only he didn't have time.

Next step, close the city.

I bet everyone on welfare gets a little bump in pay next year though.

I am sure there are a few bums that enjoy the free air conditioning; they will miss that!

I'd invest money in Mogadishu before Camden.

I'll never forget the stories about crack-ho's doing pitbulls for a rock in the 80s when crack was new.

The devil is in the details.   What are they keeping going, the subsidized school cafeteria and the cable TV feeds.   Just curious why you always hear the threat of closing libraries....like it's a litmus test for caring.

It could, if sold to a private corporation.

Municipal Libraries are the first target of dirty politicians when they get past trying to scare the voters into higher taxes by cutting police and fire.

Its serious and an admission of their incompetence and book-burning Nazi tendencies.

FUCK CAMDEN'S DEMOCRAT PARTY HACKS AND THE GOVERNMENT THEY CORRUPTED.

I wonder what the literacy rate is in Camden?

Poor people generally don't have library cards.

Too bad.  Libraries can be such a great educational resource.  Betcha few in Camden ever took advantage of it.

Where will the homeless go for their internet porn now?

I find it funny that the books are not a fire hazard until the libraries close.  Why aren't they flammable now?
