Last summer I checked out what is left of Camp Howze which is northwest of Gainesville, Tx. It was a training camp for soldiers going to Europe for WWII and also
held German POWs. Not much left now, mostly building foundations and a couple of silos. The place was huge, 59,000 acres and I guess they trained several hundred thousand of soldiers there. It was named for Major General Robert Lee Howze , who won the MOH during the Indian wars. They have some good stories about the German POWs here. Any of you guys been to any of the other training or POW camps from WWII? I know they had a lot here in Texas. Here are some Pics I found on the Web.

Thanks for the reply. Those are some great pictures. I found a list of the POW camps in the US. I might try
to take a road trip on my bike next summer and check out some of the other camps in Texas. List of POW camps in the United States |

If you ever make it up to WY, there is a Japanese internment camp from WWII. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heart_Mountain_Relocation_Center |
