Canada is a significant source of our raw materials and subassemblies, some of which have no US based alternative (trust me, we've looked). They're also a major market to sell into. The existing tariffs have cost us tens of millions of dollars in direct tax, let alone the indirect costs. And there's no sign it will get better. That is jobs, cap-ex, profit sharing and acquisitions on hold while our Asian competitors are unhindered. Our products are made more expensive and the perceved value of 'made in America' is being dilluted. We are steadily loosing market share because of this idiocy. This sucks for US manufacturing. |

| Importing aluminum and wood from Canada. Ever realize how ridiculous that is? America used to be a aluminum producing powerhouse till the enviromentalist insanity. If we get in a war with China do not be surprised if the Canadians decide no more aluminum. Canada has a bad problem with housing prices making life to expensive and their gov playing the game that everything to expensive because of America. America has nothing to do with the housing prices being out of control and their high taxes. |

Trade Representatives Office and on a goods and services basis, Canada had a $20.6 billion dollar surplus on a total of $873 billion in total trade between the 2 nations. https://ustr.gov/countries-regions/americas/canada I've pointed in out before, 41 million Canadians annually buy more American goods and services than the combined 1.6 billion populations of China and Japan. But for the fact that the USA buys over $200 billion in energy and resources from Canada (heavy crude, natural gas, potash, uranium, nickel, electricity, America would be enjoying a large annual surplus. We'll definitely feel it more in Canada but if this escalates further, there's going to additional pain on the American side... starting with it's going to negatively impact the Senate races in Michigan and Maine for the Republicans. 50% of everything Maine exports goes to Canada for starters... Maine also gets 95% of it's winter heating oil from Canada. 36% of total goods exported by Michigan go to Canada. Escalation will also increase inflationary effects up here and in the USA.... but no mid-term elections equivalent up here in November though. We'll see where aluminum goes as well.. but a 50% tariff on Cdn aluminum is moronic... while volumes are down, the USA is still buying a lot with the buyer paying the tariff and passing the additional costs on. Monthly, Canadian aluminum sales to Europe have been setting new records as well..... Why the U.S. Needs Canadian Aluminum (taken from Dec. 2025 U.S. Chamber of Commerce report) Supply Deficit: The U.S. produces a fraction of the primary aluminum it consumes annually, making foreign supply vital. Energy Constraints: Smelting aluminum requires massive amounts of continuous electricity. U.S. grid power is increasingly expensive and heavily contested by high-demand data centers. Hydroelectric Advantage: Canada—primarily Quebec—uses abundant, low-cost hydroelectric power to produce millions of tonnes of low-carbon aluminum. Economic Integration: Replacing Canadian imports with purely domestic manufacturing would require decades of infrastructure building and massive new power generation. https://www.uschamber.com/international/the-special-case-of-canadian-aluminum They don't care. You're Canadian, so you're automatically scum. You've been cheating the US, etc, etc. Protecting one's own ag industry is very normal. The US does it (quotas even). They don't care that US companies will pay more, which will drive costs up. They just care that Canada is getting hurt. My gut feeling is the Trump administration has recognized that Canada since Trudeau and now Carney have been deliberately undermining US foreign policy since way back. Siding with communist nations, socialists and other nations that have been hostile to the U.S. Trudeau never met a commie socialist that he didn’t prefer. Then let’s look at Canadian government/Ontario buying ads that lied and directly meddled in our elections. Of course they weren’t the only meddlers but that is not the activity of a friendly neighbor. The trade lopsidedness was certainly true but look at Canada….it was a lower population which was squarely just over the border not evenly spread in Canada. It grew that way as a direct result of US trade. Symbiotic relationship, parasitic relationship? That’s for each person to decide. The venom of some Canadians in the last year basically exposed the resentment for the US. It’s unflattering. Maybe we are ugly Americans but that venom and the elbows up crap simply exposed a segment’s true feelings. It’s damaging to the relationship, probably permantly. |

Canada has a bad problem with housing prices making life to expensive and their gov playing the game that everything to expensive because of America. America has nothing to do with the housing prices being out of control and their high taxes. Canada produces more aluminum because they have absurdly cheap electricity in Quebec. They don't even mine the ore, they import it from the US and Brazil. The US produces a third of the aluminum Canada does not because of environmental regulations, but because it is way, way cheaper to ship the rare ore to Canada, smelt it and ship the metal back. The reasons for that come down to a weird quirk of geography- quebec just has a fuck ton of damable rivers, and not a lot of population to consume all that excess electricity. Electricity is far and away the dominant cost of aluminum production, and the electricity is more expensive in the US and always will be. The two other big producers of aluminum, China and Russia, do it because they established big state owned smelters with organic generating capacity and local ore mining. The US just isn't going to compete with that. |

Except the CEOs and MBA bean counters that don’t care about anything but pure profit which means made in America is going to cut into that profit, hence their reluctance to do it. You’re also going to have to convince people ‘made in America’ means anything nowadays because stuff made here at the general consumer level seems to suck just as much as shit made abroad. |

Exactly what I believe the Trump position is. Push the manufacturing back here UNLESS we get a deal that is sufficiently beneficial to leave it alone. I really do think Washington is doing this in retaliation to the Trudeau era and now Carney’s undermining US world diplomacy. Trudeau was talking shit and so is Carney. That takes you out of favored friend status. |
