We were talking today at work and couldn't come up with one Canadian food that the country is famous for serving or creating.

[Beer is not a food]

We have Hawaiian, Mexican, Louisianan (sea food), Texas (ribs), Chicago (deep dish and pasta), and New York (dogs) in our little town not to mention countless Chinese, Thai, and Japanese restaurant. Heck, there's a Greek, Italian, German, and Arabic place here too ... but nothing from our good brothers to the north.

What gives?

So Canadians ... what's good to eat.

[Beer is still not a food]

Poutine, as said. Other than that, they pretty much eat the same stuff we do, 'cept instead of Bud the beer-impaired drink Molson.

Canada is a relatively young country which is mainly made up of immigrants ( go to Vancouver or Toronto and you will know what I'm talking about ) , so much of the cuisine is ethnic of fusion

If you take BC for example ( Pacific Coast ) there is huge variety of great seafood

Salmon - not the funny color farmed crap in the east coast, a huge variety depending on time of year . Popular species include Chinook, Coho, Pink, Sockey , Chum etc

Local salmon specialties is candy salmon

Local crab species are the dugeness crab found in the Pacific Northwest ( BC and Washington )

Because of the huge Asian pop in Vancouver most of the seafood is fresh ( live ). You can go down to the grocery store and buy live crabs, lobster , clams , osters , all sorts of fish at a reasonable price. So reasonable that why would you not want live

Out in Ontario / Quebec you have beaver tails ( not actually a beaver tails but a pastry ) , poutine , Vachon cakes etc.

One of my favorites is "tourtier" which is a meat pie ( ground pork, veal, beef ) which is a Quebec specialty

Some of the best maple syrup comes form upper Canada. I feel sorry for people who buy Aunt Jemima syrup

Butter Tarts are a popular dessert

East cost , Atlantic lobster (also found in Maine , Massachuesets ) and Alexander Keiths India Pale Ale

Ethnic Food - some of the worlds best ethnic food, unlike the millions of whitey ethnic food restraunts in the US

The Seattle Times and other newspapers have written recent articles claiming the best Chinese food in the region is not in Seattle but in neighbouring Vancouver

Having spent time in China / Hong Kong I can assure you the Chinese food in Canada is far nicer.

You can buy Aero Bars there, which are really good.

Also, I've enjoyed some of their cheeses.

SMOKED MEAT

I bought some in Vancouver.  Wow, is it good.  You pile it high on sammiches, like you'd see corned beef in a proper Jewish deli.

Tourtiere is delicious, easy to make, and filling.  Though that may be the 1/4 Quebecois speaking

Montreal has their own style of bagels - thrown into a hot fired oven.

Also, I'd place Alberta beef in a category all it's own... wonderful stuff.

Poutine.

Oh yes and tourtière.  Yum!!!

Best Chinese I've ever had was in Montreal.  Downtown, not in the Chinatown part.

No Aero bars and only one flavor of Kit Kat and it is really hard to find a Big Kat at all.

I went to this BIG Chinese restaurant when I was in Vancouver, because I heard the same thing. The place was a giant ballroom sized dining room, hundreds of Chinese people dressed to the nines, it was a trip.  My host was a local and had been there a lot, so he insisted that he order.  The abalone looked good and I never had that before, but I went ahead and let him order because he insisted so badly.  He ordered fucking plain roast chicken, no sauce, no spices, no nothing. And it was dry.

He could tell I was pissed/disappointed, so he paid for it.

But, all the other restaurants I went to with my friend I went there to visit were awesome.

Well... lots of "American" cars are built here....
But then again so are Honda's and Toyota's
