Mother-in-law ask me the other day about chili peppers and capsaicin as a weight lose supplement. Told her that I had no clue about it but would try and find out about it. Seems that increases general calorie being used and specifically increases the use of fat as a fuel. Anyone here actually use it as a supplement or just have better info on it?

Exercise works great.

I've heard of it, don't know how legit the theory is.

If it had more than a micro-marginal benefit and no harmful side effects everyone would know about it and it would be in every food product imaginable.

No shit. Remember I'm asking for my mother-in-law. She is exercising but looking for something to help with losing fat. I exercise and I take a protein and a joint supplement to help myself out. If the capsaicin really helps her to lose more fat along with her exercising and it doesn't otherwise harm her health, then why not take it?

Sweating your ass off will certainly burn calories.

Here's a study that suggests that there it can help very mildly with weight maintenance:

Another one, this time a study done on rats:

All in all there may be a very small benefit I suppose...certainly nothing I'd count on for weight loss. Exercise and diet is the only sure fire way to go.

Although if your MIL likes spicy stuff (I do) it can't hurt either...

Don't get pissed about an honest answer to your question.  If you could lose weight by spending money there wouldn't be any fat people who had 2 nickels to rub together.  From the conclusions of the first study RoG posted

However, capsaicin treatment has no limiting effect on 3-month weight regain after modest weight loss.

So tell your mother in law to go for it; spend away.  Placebo is a powerful drug and that alone may help her.

Cheaper and tastier:

I mean since the placebo effect is probably all we're going to get here, might as well go the cheap way right?

The one study was done in 2003 and I couldn't find a publishing date on the other but it had no cited articles more recent than 1985. In 2009 a study in the journal of Clinical Nutrition found that capsaisin may reduce appetite and also in 2009 a study in the European Journal of Nutrition showed that it decreased the hormone ghrelion which is known to promote hunger.

A 2010 study in the Journal of Proteome Research showed that it activated different proteins that broke down fat and prevented the production of fat. The American Chemical Society's Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry reported in March 2007 that capsaician inhibits fat cell growth.

Is it a magic pill? No. Is it a substitute for eating right and exercise? No. But more recent study's seem to indicate that it has much more than just a placebo or marginal effect on fat burning and appetite.

And I wasn't pissed at your honest answer H46Driver. I wasn't, and am not, pissed at anyone's answer. My "No shit." response was to Kilroy's post which was, I assume, a joking around/smart ass answer to my question. I was responding to him so he would know how much help he was. You just happened to get you post in before mine.
