I've got an old 1990 T Bird. Runs great Six banger with excellent gas mileage. I don't want to get rid of it.

It has this damn thing on the brake that requires the pedal to be depressed when turning the key.

Well, the damn thing isn't functioning correctly. Is there any way to just get rid of it or does it have to be replaced?

I asked my mechanic and he wasn't familiar with fixing them.

Is it just a matter of buying a new switch at a Napa store or does it involve more than that?

Has anybody had one malfunction on your vehicle?

Any suggestions welcome.

[BTW, this old car runs like a top and gives me 24 mpg city and 31 hwy]

The brake pedal switch should be right there behind the pedal.  I can't imagine there being any more difficulty than having to obtain a torx head driver if that's what the screws are.

ETA: the switch is probably a dealer part.

I'll let my mechanic know, thanks.

It should be adjustable for travel, just like your brake light switch. I had a 1988 T-Bird that I had to adjust often until I discovered blue Locktite (NOT red!)

You might be able to bypass the switch by poking a short piece of wire stripped on both ends into the plug.

I used to have a T-bird.  That feature annoyed the hell out of me.  There is a relay behind the dash.  Bypass it.
If your mechanic can't handle this, find a new one.

That same switch could be the same one as the brake lights-do they work?  If not just replace the switch-normally two screws but a dealer only part.
I had a "almost" similar problem with a mid-90's van that wouldn't shift out of park unless the brake pedal was pressed-it turned out to be the pressure switch on the brake master cylinder-don't know yours but may be similar-if the brake lights are working this is another inexpensive part to replace.  To test this one unplug the harness from the pressure switch-will it start now?  If so just a bad pressure switch-Don't drive farther than the reapair shop with that one unplugged (if you have abs, cause without it you have no abs-anti-lock brakes, that is).
