How is the Casio G-Shock line?

Any models to stay away from?  Any recommendations?

How are the analog models?

I have the atomic solar model of some sort for over a year now.  I love it.

I have had several through the years.

The weakest link for me was the band retainer thing.  Normally when the batteries die, I just buy a new one.

I have used them in the field and never had a problem.  Good watches for the money.

Never heard complaints about any of the G-Shock line. Have 2 myself.

Do not want. Bought one for my brother and it was junk in under 8 months. I wouldn't buy another.

I got fed up with G-shocks batteries dying on my after a year or two... and they want to charge you damned near the price of a new watch if you have them change the battery AND replace the gasket and pressure check it.

I like G-shocks.... but I went to an automatic watch.

[#6]
Good stuff, but thicker and more expensive than a Timex Ironman.

Now the G-shock is arguably built better, and maybe more water resistant.

Honestly, I do not know. They could be equal. Truth is I've never "broken" one of either type.

I can say without a doubt that the G-shock features a very long battery life.

I prefer Timex Ironman watches for the most part. More comfortable, and I just like em more.

The battery life is about 2yrs, which isn't too bad IMO... but the G-shock 10yr battery is obviously better.

I really like G-Shocks.  I have not noticed problems with battery life, but on the otehr hand the watch does a lot and the light is damn bright when you use it, so maybe shorter battery life is a trade off.

My only complaint with G-shocks is that the watch band uses the same weak little pins every other watch does.  I was putting body armor on in a hurry during a deployment one time and snagged the watch on some strap or something, ripping that stupid little pin out and losing my watch in the dust.  There should be a stronger design for something that's supposed to be a tough watch.  Other than that though, they are good.

Have a Casio Pathfinder PAW 1500 solar/atomic.  compass, barometric pressure, altitude, moon phase, tide indicator.  It is light and comfortable and by far my favorite watch.

Are you buying old watches or something?

Do you use the backlight often?

G-Shocks were my favorite model of watch...back when I wore a watch.

[#11]
The first thing you need to find out is how many mm wide you want your watch to be. I personally wear a watch that is 43mm across and wouldn't like to go much smaller.

Some people I see wearing watches look like they're wearing something the size of a quarter on their arm,

which is ok if you're 150 pounds, but looks damn goofy if you're 250 pounds.

I'm a member of a watch forum or two and it seems to me the guys love their g-shocks. Even guys who have thousand dollar plus watches like g-shocks for what they are.

The gshock I would recommend getting is an atomic and solar powered watch.

Depending how much you wanted to spend, you could get an Automatic Hamilton. Do not buy any watch that takes a battery except for a solar powered gshock.

http://www.authenticwatches.com/hamilton-watches.html

This is the board I like to read to watch (no pun intended)  the prices on used watches:

http://forums.timezone.com/index.php?t=threadt&frm_id=32

You should  be happy with a gshock.

Admittedly I haven't done any research into the issue...

but I have read a bit about some issues with the solar powered watches.

Might be something worth digging into before dropping any coin on one. I'm just sayin'.

+1 on the atomic solar
12/16/2009 10:39:01 AM EDT
[#15]
On my wrist right now:

Batteries recharge in light, so hopefully no battery worries. I wanted a metal band watch, since every watch I like has had those stupid plastic bands which end up breaking, and then cost as much as a new watch to replace.

[#16]
I have the GW5600-J1 Atomic Timekeeper with Solar battery. (~$65 at Amazon earlier this year)

It resets the time itself nightly, and the battery recharges with natural light. The band appears to be attached with screws.

I like it fine, and would buy it again.

I have several g shocks, have never replaced the batteries and have had no problems except for the strap that retains the end of the band broke on one of them

1.  it is ugly
2.  the manual is so darn small, it is unreadable.
3.  I put it in the drawer for years before pulling it out.
4.  I had the battery replaced and started wearing it a couple of weeks ago.  I had to go to a copy place to tediously blow up the manual which was not available on line.
5.  The good news is that I like it!  The other good news is that when I go to Mississippi to take care of my 91 year old step mother recovering from surgery, I will have the time to read the 53 page manual.

Have that exact model but with a rubber strap. Had it for over a year and wear it 2-3 times a week. Never a problem.

Really, did you leave a review of the watch on Amazon.com? I just read a review about a guy who said he loved the watched but someone stole it in Iraq.

I wear mine 7 days a week, from morning until night.

[ETA] The other thing I like besides the atomic time keeping and solar charging of the batteries is the deeply recessed glass face, since I always manage to get those scratched up on watches wth a flush face, and the fact that I can take the watch off and bludgeon someone with its heft.

Worn one since 1987. I only replaced one once beacuse I scrached the face too much to read. Only watch I had that didn't stop working after repeated abuse.

That's one of the best features of the G-Shock IMO, the recessed face I mean. The weight and ability to use it as a weapon are just added benefits!

My previous G-Shock finally got replaced because the strap broke after around 10 years of abuse. It's in the drawer right now, still running on the original battery.

Many of the newer ones don't require batteries ever - many have solar chargers built in. Even cooler is that a lot of them automatically set themselves via radio from the NBS.

In terms of ruggedness, I haven't found anything that could kill either of the ones I've owned. And when the strap breaks after 10 years, you buy another watch at around $50 or so and have a complete new good looking watch.

I do like the G-Shock line a lot.  I have a Citizen Chrono for when I'm trying to look (somewhat) good.

HECK NO, Cleatus!  My son liked to try to light it up when he was more of a toddler.  I wouldn't let him.  I was very stingy with the back light.  I have 3 dead Gshocks in my gun cabinet.

Oh yeah... and the wrist bands last even shorter than the battreeze.  I have various piles of spare wrist bands, parts pins and such.

All I need is a watch to tell time.  I don't think it took my 1st grade teacher 53 pages to teach me how.

(And yes, I'm the same luddite that wants a cell phone to make phone calls.  No pictures, no movies, no ringtones, no telegrams, no "apps".)

I've got an MTG-910. Atomic solar G-Shock with black metal band. I've had it about a year now. No issues other than the black finish is wearing off the bottom of the band. Kind of gives it a worn look so doesn't really bother me. Best $100 you could spend on a watch.

I save my better watches for occasional use.

For knocking around daily, I use one of these cheap casios: http://www.amazon.com/Casio-Classic-Digital-Watch-W71-1V/dp/B000AR7RYK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=watches&qid=1262987483&sr=1-2

I've never been able to break one.  IMO, the G-Shock series is oversized for no reason (diving use excluded).

[#46]
Been using them for the last 20+ years.
The analog seem to work as well as anything out there.
I prefer the analog/digital combinations and wish Casio would offer more versions.

eta:  I used to kill Timexs by just regular unabusive wear (within a month).  After doing this to 2 of them back to back I refuse to use them.
Casios no problems.

I have a Mudman Atomic Solar that has been on my wrist for 8 or so months.

This thing is tough. I broke a Citizen Eco-Drive Aqualand on a freediving trip. It filled with water at 85 feet. After Citizen would not fix it, I bought the G-Shock after reading about it on AR15. I did own the Aqualand for 8 years though, and it has gone deeper.

The Mudman has been to around 90 feet and survived. It has spend a lot of hours in and around salt water and I have generally beat the shit out of it.

So far so good, but only time will tell.

My G-Shock is great. Had it for more than 5 years now, been through hell. The band is worn out, but other than that, its still keeping very accurate time on the original battery.
