Internet. They even quote you a price over the phone and supply a shipping label. They all go to the west coast, get stacked in shipping containers and ride a ship to China.

The company I work for spends tens of thousands of dollars on this problem. I was working on our lot and they stole one not even 20 yards from me and left in a hurry when I noticed, this was at 11am.

That vehicle had already 5k in cats put on already, last week a very famous vehicle that travels the country was hit. Fuck thieves.

CatClamp if the big name in theft prevention, wrap of steel rope cables that a sawzall can't cut. Need a special cutter for the wire rope but I'd imagine thieves are now carrying the cutter in addition so $500 down drain for the prevention cables and the cost of a new cat installed if they have the cutter and a sawzall.

Thieves need a big punishment and scrap dealers that know they're buying stolen cats need to be imprisoned. No VIN# and DL for ID no buy.

which type of vehicles are usually not targeted by catalytic converter thieves ?

right now i have the belief they only target large vehicles that are high enough off the ground that allows them to slide under to get it cut off quickly.

There have been several news stories about thieves getting killed or injured by vehicle jack malfunctions.

If they're using jacks, any vehicle is a target.

Slipped out of work 15min early a month or so back. Heard weird noise coming from the back of the parking lot. Figured one of the shop guys was having a problem with his car. Turned out someone was cutting the cat off one of our employees cars. I ALMOST went over to check out the noise.

I wonder if I would still be breathing now if I had caught the SOB in the act...

Not allowed to carry at work so I'd have had no way to shoot back.

They aren't. No local scrap yard will buy cats from an individual. They get sold at the backdoor of your local muffler shop and THEN taken to the yard or they are mailed to a Chinese front company.

No. They are hitting Toyota Prius hard, and the only way to find a lower vehicle is to look for one with a chrome chain steering wheel and A-13 tires on gold-plated wire basket rims.

Because they profit a ton from it as well. In most states. Here, you need to show DL/Photo ID and have the VIN# of the vehicle it was from which the police check regularly whenever there are thieves. Having cats without VIN#/History and they're up a shit creek. Everything to a scrap dealer needs an ID which puts name on receipt both seller and dealer keep.

States that allow scrap dealers to take anything from copper ripped out of new buildings to catalytic converters with no questions asked need to be jailed. It's pretty obvious when the same guy comes in every week with hundreds of feet of randomly cut lengths of romex/stripped lengths of copper or more than a couple catalytic converters to sell without any history of where it was from. The first time, I can see it but when they hit several dealers round robin they need to provide ID. Even bringing in bags of aluminum cans needs an ID which I thought was silly but now I understand the reason.

It's no different than pawn shops needing an ID an police running through them each month to match any stolen stuff.

The stolen airbags go to crooked parts dealers and they're required to have the VIN# of vehicle it was from and paper trail. Now some manufacturers are putting the VIN# on just about every part at the factory (even glass) due to theft issues and cars stolen making removing all VIN#s difficult. That doesn't help when they're put in a truck headed to Mexico though.

Even if you were carrying, how would you detain him? Problem with smartphones is you can't just hold down the 9 button inconspicuously, you need both hands to unlock it then hold phone up to head to speak to dispatch, taking eyes off thief who very well may attack. Can't shoot unless he runs at you with sawzall, if he just runs there's nothing you can do that wouldn't put you in deeper shit than him.

Say you're carrying large zip ties for some reason, like a tool belt for work, how would you control him when you're the only one there? Optimal outcome would be him surrendering and laying down and somebody else calling police but that isn't going to happen, most people are just going to ignore it. All you can do is get a description and who knows if his buddies will come up behind out or if they're parked a block away you won't get a license plate number.

Thieves are pretty brazen because they can be. They're protected. Only time they're not protected is on your property and then only after dark in some states. Taking out a kneecap then dialing 911 would probably get you more jail time than him even if it was a good shoot because he rushed you. We're in bizzaro world where criminals are enabled and police don't bother looking for "small time" thieves, only write a report that a theft happened and nothing is done about it even if a description is provided. More will happen if you have a license plate number but even then not really.

It's no wonder the flash mobs can storm a store and take everything they want then run away. There are no repercussions anymore, there's not even investigations anymore.

They have gotten 4 around my workplace in the last 2 weeks. They wear all black clothes, masks, and reflective vests - it does no good to get camera footage of them. The cops were supposed to come by today and look at my cameras because they got one across the street last night, but I am still waiting for them.

Shooting them is ok…but being crushed under the car they were going to phuck up for the owner is much more appropriate! Hopefully not found before they turn bright blue and chit their pants, though.
