Shotgun shells are no good. Too bulky. Not practical to have enough.

Arf brainstormed this long ago. You need at least one rd for every person that lives within 100miles to even have a chance. Better 200miles and that's a lot more. Not only is it 4x the area but many more people will have a substantial metropolis within that radius. PCCs supplemented by rifles offer better capability and efficiency.

That's assuming that they're "destroy the brain" type zombies. If they're magically animated undead where even dismembered limbs remain an active threat or zombies animated by a parasite that hijacks the nervous system from anywhere in the body then firearms are no longer effective except as a mechanism to break contact and shotguns might have an application here. The only real survival mechanism is defences which funnel them into burn pits.
