When i burn a cd and go to playing it in a cd player(multiple) the first half of the cd is fine and then towards the middle the music starts to screw up, like it is a scratched disk, then the last songs won't play at all. Sometimes when i burn a disk it will play fine, and then maybe one song will disappear. Or it will burn with no problems. I have used different types of cd's. Burnt it in musicmatch, and windows media. All turn out about the same. It is really a pain in the ass.  It is a phillips cd dvd r/w in my dell laptop. If anyone can help me figure this out i would apreciate it. Thank you.

could be a firmware update to make it compatible with newer cd-r's    you can download them from dells webpage for free.   (type in your service tag under support and it will give you the available downloads for you system)

you might buy a cd lens cleaner and clean it as well

if that doesn't fix it i would have to say there is something wrong with the drive itself
