I wanted to get ceiling fans when we bought our home as an option and the wife wasn't into them. She has since seen the light and I have the ok to get them. We have 9' ceilings. I want them to use to help out for power outages as well.

Anyone have any suggestions/hints concerning ceiling fans?

Are you using it also as a light fixture?

Either way, after doing 9 ceiling fans, I'd totally recommend Hunter over everyone else's... They're quieter, have a more intelligently designed selfbalancing motor and blade housing with damped suspension.

But if you can climb a ladder and tell black from white from red, and wire a lightbulb, you're good to go.

Remember the USPS has 10% off coupons in new mover packages at the post office, or if you're  Costco member you can often get significantly better prices there than at Lowes or the Depot.

I have all hunters in my house ( and the last house too) and have never had a problem. Install is easy AS LONG as the box that is in the ceiling is rated for a ceiling fan.

in the winter run the fan in reverse on low and it helps move the warm are from high down towards the floor.

I just installed Hunter fans in my house (flush mount no light kit) and it mounted with three-inch screws driven up through the drywall and into structure beneath.

When I remodeled I mounted metal boxes to 2x4s suspended between the joists with deck screws thinking that I wanted the fan to be very structurally sound.  Thankfully I was able to mount the fans to the 2x4 I had mounted the box to.  There were also bushings to go in between the bracket and the ceiling so that when all was said and done you can hear ZERO noise from the fan.

Had I not built the boxes the way I did it would have been a little harder to install.

Make sure to use boxes specifically listed for ceiling fan support if they aren't already installed

Can't go wrong with Hunter.

Take the time to balance and trim the blades.
It's worth it in noise and vibration reduction.

Hunter is a good brand.  I have a couple and had them in other homes.

New technology is in the light kits so be careful.  They only allow three candelabra bulbs at a max of 60 IIRC.  This is a big step down from the standard four base lights.  If you are like us and use the light kit as a major lighting source in a large room you may want to look for an older used fan(?)

Its for your safety.

I had to replace one recently in my BR; big problem is the only ones available locally (outside Austin) take those new funky
lamps that put out a diffrent color of white light, and have a slight delay in starting.

I agree on quality, but maybe look for a NOS (new[still in box]Old Stock) fan that uses the older style bulbs.

Firebird, mine has 4 lamps (got at Lowes[vet. discount everyday); where you at in Tx?

I am in DFW.  I doubt you'll find a NOS lamp kit since it was the Bush Admin that signed into the changed that forced the MFG's of the fans and light kits to restrict the bulb base and amount of watts that they can deliver.

two hunters in my living room. they can push some serious air around while on high.
they also have the regulator and put out decent light but you can tell they are regulated way down from what they should be.
fwiw the regulator is inside the light kit and it easy to cut out....

would go with hunter even if they cost more.
got a clearance walmart fan for our kitchen and its decent
doesnt have the light regulation and puts out way more light
also puts out a bunch more noise.

If you need to replace the boxes, this is what to look for at the good ole' Home Depot:

Real easy, stick the bar in the hole with the little black tabs flush on the back side of the drywall and twist to spread.
I think they are rated for 50 lbs.? But you should read the box.

Of corse if you have attic access you may want to just tack on a 2x6 scrap (preferred method).
