So I just bought a house that had been painted when newly constructed in 2007. Going to be repainting the downstairs and wanted to go over the ceiling paint.

I went and bought a 5 gallon thing of Glidden professional from HD on impulse, because it was cheap at $68 otd (including a thing of floetrol additive).

Not interested in spending $20-30/gal on paint, as the deep splatter knockdown texture has required 2 gallons in each of the upstairs bedrooms (this being Glidden pink-to-white stuff), and I require 5 gallons/coat for the downstairs. However, if it is really worth it, I will spend it.

What says the hive?

I say that painting, especially a ceiling, is a huge pain the ass.

Nope.  Go cheap.

Eta: especially if you're going over texture

I agree however it needs it and hiring professional painters is $$$ in Houston right now.

Go to a local PPG branch and as long as you pay cash, I know some contractors that wouldnt mind letting you use their account

Whatever you do I say paint the ceiling a lighter color than the walls.

This.  Spray it.  Especially if you have a heavily textured surface, you'll save a lot of paint, time and aggravation.
