What does everyone pay to have an AR lower ceracoated?  My local FFL said he does it for $80. That seems crazy high.

What's wrong with the coating it already has?

I've seen 50-100.

The cost isn't in the work, it's in the high cost of the cerakote 'paint'.

You could always try doing it yourself...

I have access to a blasting cabinet and a commercial air compressor. I guess a paint gun is all I need.

The last time I checked, the HAZMAT fees on getting ceracoat shipped was a deal breaker...

Its easier than you think, just take your time and read through all of the instructions first. If you just want one item done its cheaper to have someone else do it but if you want to paint an entire rifle, parts, multiple firearms, etc... I would say do it yourself. And then if you have friends who want their guns done you can charge them a few bucks and make a little money on the side.

I bought a tiny compressor off craigslist for $15, a sand blasting gun for $10, a bag of playground sand for $5, a basic air brush kit for $20 and the cerakote was $35
total cost $85

Ive done this rifle and am planning to do 2 others and a pistol in the near future, just haven't had the time.

Prep is key, make sure to wear gloves and even change gloves between prep steps to avoid cross contamination. Clean, degrease, blast/surface prep, clean, degrease, acetone bath.

Not like Cerakote.
It will wear off.
For me, it started wearing around the mag well first.

And an oven.

And experience.

It isn't something you get right the first time you try. I've done a lot of parts. After a lot of parts I consider myself "decent".

$80 for an upper/lower isn't bad

Use clean alum ox in 80 grit range, use a decent airbrush set to wide pattern on about 25-40 psi. Make sure all blasting and painting has a water separator in line directly before air intake.

It's not that hard just a pain in the ass.
