Anyone know if there is a way to do this without 3rd party software?
If not, anyone want to recommend a decent freeware program that does this safely?

Yes....I am aware that search engines exist
I did seach around for a while before posting and found several downloads.
Before going to a utility I was hoping for a manual tweak....some backdoor in the OS or registry modification to accomplish the same function (basically, trying to find out what lies within the executable files that can be downloaded)

Before I download some random executable to my personal PC I was hoping for a recommendation from a member here...not just roll the dice on some random piece of internet software.

More than that though...I just want to know 'how' to do it.
Obviously it can be done....the downloadable utilities arent magic...they somehow modify the folder attribute....there must be a way to do it. All any utility does is make a really fancy macro of some manual action and package it. I want to know the manual steps....call me crazy

Can't you just change the date and time on your computer, save the folder or whatever you need to do, and then change the computer's time back?

Bottom right, right click time. Left click adjust date/time. Set to desired date. Modify folder. Change date back.

you can duplicate the file as a backup before trying it so there's little worry...

What did you screw with?

A friend took a guy to court.  The court found that the defendant had manipulated the dates on some very important files, including false date stamps on pictures.
