Is there a cheaper version of the ACOG out there that does the job almost as well?

NCStar ACOG.

Legit as fuck.

Primary Arms is coming out with a fixed 2.5 and fixed 4x scope with their ACSS reticle soon. Uses ACOG mounts and everything. The 2.5x is going to be about $249.

Or jump on craigslist near any military base, plenty of cheap, new in package ACOGs...until CID or NCIS shows up. (don't be a dumbass, this is a joke.)

A used ACOG is the only way you will get one cheaper.  Quality, bombproof optics cost $$$.

My best score on ACOGs was in 08 or so before the Zero 1.0 panic.  LGS had some TA33s they couldn't move and I got a few at cost...< $700 NIB

That sounds about right.  They are like cars.  Drive them off the lot and they depreciate pretty quick but are still like new.

You're seriously asking this in GD instead of the optics forum?

Primary Arms and Burris make compact prism optics that are similar in theory. There's a ton of cheaper ones that are all piles of shit for the most part.

That said, I think the TA01 is a $500 optic at best.

There is a reason a "slightly used" TA31F goes for $700.  Ask me how I know....

Hey I got more replies here in fifteen minutes than I'd probably get in a day in the optics forum.

A used ACOG is the least expensive ACOG you can get.

I have no doubt.  Send them in to Trijicon for service and you might learn an interesting story about your serial number.

I've bought 2 very lightly used ACOGs off the EE for $700 and $775 delivered. Both were in excellent condition. One came with a LaRue mount.

Did you buy a stolen or counterfeit ACOG?

A Lucid just LOOKS like an ACOG. It has no magnification and is more or less a fancy 30mm mutli reticle red dot sight.

Not to take anything away from the Lucid, though. They are great sights... just not in the same function / feature category as an ACOG.

It's a good sight. I did speak to a Lucid rep a couple months ago whom did confirm to me that they were working on an HD7 style magnified combat optic.

I'd look for a used ACOG or the Burris AR332. On the tail end of my time in the National Guard, our company commander authorized the use of the Burris for soldiers that didn't have ACOGs. A few guys used them, and they seemed to hold up pretty well.

I bought a Trijicon certificate from a guy who won the Rocky Mountain 3 gun match for $800.  The certificate was good for any Trijicon optic up to a $1640 retail value.  I had the guy send me a pic of the certificate.  I called Trijicon and verified the certificate and number on it was valid.  They said it was.  So I got a brand new TA31RCO-A4CP.  It took about 12 weeks to arrive.  It was worth the wait.  I have yet to see one of those for sale new under $1250.

A Burris AR 332 scope for about $300 is a good alternative to a $1,000 ACOG.

It is not military quality but it will do everything that an ACOG will do at about the same weight.  It will be fine for range use, hunting or even self defense.

Just buy a used one for about 700 and use the hell out of it.  Then in a few years sell it off for the exact same price and buy you a different, newer one.

I just got back from a gun show. Those things were everywhere, along with an incredible number of brands I have never heard of before, yet are exactly what the "operators" are all using these days.

The IOR QR-TS or the Browe Sport Optic are two other options. Too bad both aren't much cheaper than an ACOG although the Sport Optic still has me interested.
