Customer brought in a flat tire today.

No big deal, she ran over a piece of brass.

"But you won't beleive what happens next"
(Click bait title^)
Took the tire off the wheel and found;

Appears she hit a loaded round just right and slapped the primer on the road enough to light it off.  I've seen a lot of things in tires, but this is a first. :)

Pretty neat!

It ignited?  That looks like a lot of unspent powder inside the tire.

ETA:  It must have to have blown out the neck like that.  Did only some of the powder burn before it became too dispersed to ignite the rest of it or what?  IOW, what are all those granules?

I don't think the round discharged. It looks like it just took a beating in the tire.

I could be wrong too.

Maybe a squib round with just a primer?

So can the tire be patched or is it done for?

And common man, the guy is a mechanic. I don't expect mechanics to have perfect fingernails. (If that's why you posted a picture of a brush)

I don't think I'd patch it. It looks like it's about due for a new one anyways.

There's a lot of powder around the case inside the tire. The case doesn't have any powder ash and it's too much unburned powder for a spent round. Maybe it fell apart and then the primer fired.

I'd cut out the piece and hang it on the wall of shame with the projectile.

That's pretty much what a case does when not supported by a chamber. Lots of unburnt powder since there's no pressure from pushing the bullet down the barrel. You get a highly inefficient burn.

You can't compare brass fired in the confined chamber of a rifle to one that ignited out in the open.

Well, I guess that one beats the time I found a GM door key in the tread of a tire once. The key portion was in the tread, and the square portion that you attach to a keyring had worn about 3/4 the way down the key.

Happened to me.  Drove by a local scrap yard where there's always junk spilled in the road.  Started hearing "clang, clang, clang".  I think it took 2-3 plugs twisted together
