Here's Les Stroud's version.  He heated up the needle but pushed too hard and the hot needle stabbed into his nail bed.  This one makes my eyes water.

Using a needle makes to small of a hole and the blood will clog it quickly.  Use a straitened out paperclip and instead of poking a hole all you do is rest it on the nail (nail will melt) and instant relief.
