Ok guys I gotta question.  i currently have a 93 Cavalier and I am looking at buying a 2000-2004 Chevy Impala.  Strengths and weaknesses please and if not the Impala what should I get.  I am partial to GM DO NOT LIKE FORDS.

Chrysler Hemi 300. If you have to have a reason...then you don't need it.

I'd buy an mid late 90's japanese car for the same price if I was you.

I'm a Chevy fan but will not buy an American car for general purposes.

The brakes are the biggest issues with those cars I believe.

I'm not a fan of GM but my wife liked the Impala so I bought her a new 2003 about 18 months ago.  I've been pleasantly surprised by it.  We now have 50K miles on it and have only had two small problems, both of which were covered by the warranty.  First was a bad plug wire and the second was a loose wiper arm.  Other than that we have been very happy with it.

The '06 Impala looks cleaner than the current one, and has a V8 available... if that's within your budget.  I like the current Impala pretty well, though... The 3.4 has been pretty reliable, and the 3.8 even more so.  Feels roomier than even an Intrepid.  I work for a Chevy dealer... let me know if you want any more specific info.

I'd wait to get one.

The 2006 Impala will come with the 310hp 5.3
The 06 Monte is getting it to.

I used a 2004 Impala LS. Overall a nice car. But I like GM. Some of the things that bothered me, but it is just me, were the floor shifter. I don't like them, I like a column shifter for the leg room. And the 3800 engine doesn't get that good of milage. But it will cruise along at 90 mph if you want it to, but it's sucking fuel by then. I did notice a vibration in the braking. Not so much hard braking but light braking, like on nieghborhood streets. I would get a plain jane Impala and get the upgrade package like cruise control, power seat and aluminum wheels. It's probable good for 5 to 7 years if you buy brand new. The new Impalas are going to have different engines this year from what I have heard. And they are changing the body style a bit too.

We had a 2000 3.4l V6
very nice ride when new.
Brakes were lousy kept warping the roters(not enough metal) also replaced the coolant level sensor twice and did the thermostat at 40k.
Had an intake leak fixed and door trim on the drivers side rear, both under warrenty.
however it passed the side impact crash test with flying colors, wifey didn't even get a scratch.( punk in an 80s firbird spinning tires lost control T-Bone. sherrifs deputy " That throttle don't look stuck to me boy.")
