Hello,

Very shady shade tree mechanic checking in here.

Long story, but I have the heads off my LT1.  The block is still in the Caprice.

With a flywheel turning tool I can bring the pistons in the # 2 and #3 cylinders to the top of their stroke - then thunk - and I am unable to turn any further.
Reverse the direction of rotation and I can bring the pistons in the # 1 and #6 cylinders to the top of their stroke - then thunk - I am unable to turn any further.

 Pointers?

The engine has about 150k miles on it.  There is still good crosshatch on all cylinder walls.
There is some carbon ridge at the very top of the cylinder, but even with it scraped (with a plastic scraper) and wiped off well I can't keep turning the crank to get the pistons past the top of the stroke.

Is the stoppage due to something in the cylinder/piston area or cam/lifters or something else?

Thanks!

J.

Was the engine running before you dissasembled it?

Yes it was running fine ... when it was parked in my driveway because the 3-4 clutches went out in the transmission.

I pulled and rebuilt the trans in my spare time over the course of a few months.
When I went to reinstall the trans at least one of the piston rings were stuck.  I couldn't turn the flywheel at all.
I fixed that by pulling the spark plugs and squirting PB Blaster in the holes morning and night for a week.
Then I could turn it to the limits that I have now, but figured that one of the cylinder walls was all rusty / corroded above a certain point.
That assumption turned out to not be correct, and I am not really sure where the next thing to check is.

Thanks,
J.

Next thing to check is that the trans is in neutral.

Next: does the engine turn with the trans or torque converter(if applicable) disconnected? What I'm recomending is only to isolate the problem (trans/engine) and to make sure the trans was rebuilt properly(not questioning you ,just going through the steps I would do if it was me).

Also try a large ratchet (1/2 in. long handle preferably) with appropriate socket and turn the crank rather than fly wheel. you'll get better leverage that way.
