| I cut the grass at my moms house two weeks ago (wearing shorts, like a dumbass) and I have horrible bites on my legs and one on my arm. I'm pretty sure they are chigger bites. They are still itching. I read they can last up to three weeks. |

I read they can last up to three weeks. Get your doc to prescribe an ointment and follow instructions, you do not want the chiggers to spread and wash all your clothes. Chiggers in NJ are a nasty variety. |
|
Keep them clean and dry. They will form a clearish head in a few days, which people like me like to scrub off and douse with rubbing alcohol(burns so good). Benadryl at night to help you sleep and keep itching down.
Going to the doctor for a shot will do nothing at all except make the bites smaller for a little while, then it all comes back even more pissed off than before. I get chiggers twice a year at least. you can minimize them in the future by spraying deet around your sock line, and the tops and bottoms of your pants. If you're going to be on the ground at all, spray everywhere else too. They like dark, moist places. This means they will set up camp on your nuts and asscrack if you give them a chance. |

Nail polish remover will help relieve the itching. I'm serious.
I was stationed at Ft. Chaffee for two years. We spent almost 30 weeks/year in the field as OPFOR. We don't have chiggers up here so wasn't prepared for the onslaught. Holy cow, they made my life hell. I had a ring of chigger bites around both wrists and both ankles for two years straight. Premethrine helped keep them at bay and nail polish remover helped relieve the itching. |

When I was 10, I had 211 chigger (red bug) bites in the area covered by a pair of Fruit of the Loom briefs. Mom counted them as she put finger nail polish on each (which apparently doesn't actually do anything.. stupid wives tale.) Worked for me. ETA: it's a short term solution, not a permanent cure. It'd last until I sweated it off or took a shower, |
I got chiggers at Fort Hood, Once Upon a Time, REAL Bad. I'm talking about ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() out of ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() itching. Just typing this I'm getting an itch.
For two whole nights I was unable to sleep due to the itch that would not go away. NOTHING worked. Placebos were more effective than anything I was able to get. The lengths we went through to keep from getting chigger bites whenever we went to The Field bordered on insanity. scratchscratchscratchscratchscratch The only good thing about chigger bites is that they went away after three misery filled days. Two days of 100% pure misery then something of a relief. scratchscratchscratchscratchscratch I will pity nearly anybody that gets bitten by a chigger.

Had a good friend come visit from Amsterdam. He had never had a chigger bite in his life, then he went walking in the Texas Hill country. We had to take him to the ER. His pasty white legs looked like they were hit with a box of birdshot. ![]() A soldier in my platoon in BCT was medically discharged because of chiggers. He had horrible body odor. Drills made him take 2-3 showers a day when we weren't in the woods. He smelled horrendous. I couldn't imagine going through life like that. He made it all the way to field week - the last week before graduating AIT. I don't know if they're attracted to BO, but our first night out he got covered head to toe and was medevaced by helicopter the next morning. We never saw him again. I didn't get a single bite so didn't really know what to make of it. I didn't know what chiggers were. It wasn't until two years later that I went to Chaffee and had my real introduction to those little bastards. |

Disclaimer: Actual medical advise to follow.
Got to the store and get 1. Instant itch relief stuff, it contains benzocaine and hydrocortisone. 2. A small thing of childrens Zyrtec, should be liquid form. 3. Bendryl cream. Mix all together in equal amounts and apply liberally. You'll forget you have them within a couple of hours. |
|
Here are some good remedies.

Doesnt clear nail polish or nail polish remover solve that problem? Temporarily. Another poster said he didn't have much luck with it, but worked well for me so YMMV. If nothing else and you're stupid and scratch off the scabs before you put the nail polish on, the incredible burning will take your mind off the itching for a bit. Ask me how I know. Did anyone else hear the rumor that troops had suffered brain damage by wearing flea collars above their boots to keep the bugs off? That was popular the last time I was at Hood. |

Screwing on a quilt under the moon light in johnson grass back in 1966 resulted in chiggers on the male codsack, ass-crack, and the female equivalent body parts. I have compassionately understood why a dog drags its ass across the carpet ever since. That young lady never spoke to me again. |
