Personally, I was never on the "it will flop" train. Something doesn't have to be GOOD to be POPULAR. The fact that a single democrat is ever elected to any office is proof of that! Just because a movie makes a lot of money, or is widely praised does not necessarily make it a good movie, and vice versa.

I generally do not give Hollyweird leftist fucksticks my hard-earned dollars. If I go see a movie, it's because it's both entertaining AND does not pander to leftist bullshit. Downplay it all you want but there's too much of that crap in this one. Will be avoiding.

The more the government tells us we should not do a thing or have a thing, the more crucial it is that we do those things and have those things.

At the announced budget of 250 million, it needs 500-625 million just to break even.  Announced hollywood budgets I think can be safely treated as always lies, and always (unless an known incentive exists in a partuclar case) as horrendously understating real total costs to make a movie.

LLM ai estimate:
🔢 Total Estimated Actual Cost
Category Estimated Cost
Actual Production (incl. hidden) $300–340M
Worldwide P&A $150–175M
Video/Distribution Encoding $7–15M
Participations/Residuals/Overhead $50–80M
Interest + Distribution Fees $50–70M
Additional Insurance/Security $10–15M
TOTAL $567–655 million
💡 Break-Even Point

Using the industry 2.5x rule (box office needs to be 2.5× total cost to profit):

  Break-even box office: $1.4–1.6 billion [5]
As of July 19, 2026, The Odyssey has grossed $264 million worldwide [1], so it is far from break-even.
View Quote

And an assessment of returns by theater type and location, factoring in what % of ticket sales theaters take:

5. Final Verdict

At current performance, The Odyssey is far from profitable on a theatrical-only basis. Even with a strong international run and China release, it will likely need $1.2B+ in box office to cover costs. If it caps at $500M–$550M, Universal will face a $100M–$200M loss unless ancillary revenues exceed expectations.

Ai version, prompts, source links, etc., so you can back check this stuff if you want at the link up above.

It needs 500-625 million to cover the hollywood accounting budget they announced, and educated guesses say it *breaks even* at 1.2-1.6 billion. Not makes a profit-  *breaks even* - oh, and nolan got a clause that means the more the movie makes, the more he gets. He's riding this thing like an albatross around it's neck, as far as profitability to the studio is concerned.

--------

what I find interesting is that a movie with obviously leftist cultural entryism going on in it does better than hollywood naysayers expected it to, and somehow that's  -  for the leftists in hollywood: "woke won."  They're saying that in a room littered with the corpses of movies that never reached theatrical net profit and probably didn't even reach post-release net profit.

I too didn't think it would flop like Supergirl or Snow White, however, I certainly didn't think it would do so well.

After watching it, I am still befuddled it's doing so well, it's just not that impressive.

Someone commented on the actors' accents, or lack thereof, earlier in the thread.

I couldn't stop thinking about that comment when I watched the movie.

Watching British Tom Holland play a Greek dude with an American accent was just bizzare.

Wouldn't it be hilarious if the movie "my big fat greek wedding" was culturally and actors and accent wise *more greek* than nolan's 'odyssey' ...?

I saw it this last weekend. I thought it was ok. I’m not into Homer, so I’m not going on how close it is to the original text. Just is it worth seeing? I say yes. Because the more woke actor picks, didn’t seem to have enough screen time to ruin it completely. Helen was the main over the top mistake in casting. I don’t mean to disparage the actress personally. But if you’re casting a black or any female for that matter, as Helen, she should be considered a beauty in her own right, before she was ever cast. Jada Pinket Smith, Beonce, Hailey Berry in her prime for example. The actress they used would likely be considered average by most black men.

My wife did make a point when we talked about it after the show. That a black woman might be considered “Exotic” like owning a lion or leopard? But to me it just didn’t work. But her scenes were not that long and glossed over by the story itself. It will make some money, but will most likely be soon forgotten.

To be clear, and like I said earlier in the thread, the movie is fantastic, the DEI elements were an inconsequential <10 minutes of the movie, and Nolan skipped the usual pre-screening rigmarole because he knew he produced something great. The movie is legit great.  The box office returns speak to that.  Especially considering this is a 3 hour long movie with substance.  This isn't a McDonalds cheeseburger of a movie.  It's a Morton's steak.

People claiming they wont see it because Lupita Nyongo is in it  are just being petty as hell.  Clearly you're not hurting Nolan or the studio because people are packing into theaters to see it.  if anything you're just depriving yourself of an entertaining time because of some racial hang-ups.

And stuff like the "fake theater tickets" is insane cope.  People literally sound unhinged trying to turn everything into some grand conspiracy theory instead of applying occam's razor and accepting that it's doing well because it's pretty good.

Uh ... who said there's fake theater tickets involved? I sure didn't?

It's not a grand conspiracy.

People go because it's nolan, it's imax, and it's been pushed as an event movie, not just a normal movie.

People accept the leftist stunt casting because (among other things) we're used to hollywood doing it all the time - it's not exotic bad, it's "normal" bad.

If you don't care about the source and you don't care about what hollywood does or why it does it, the movie is just a few hour's spectacle, and you're not likely spend much thought on it.

If I wanted to be entertained, I'd just sit and watch morons on the road out by my house drive like idiots for free.

The attacks on the movie are understandable.

What's an outlier and odd this time around is people who usually know better defending things (some of them, defending things they've attacked in the past - not referring to posters on this board) in and about this movie that usualy wouldn't be.

I'm kinda non-plussed by it, outside of the things I just mentioned above.

Or, you know, we're all just unhinged lunatics hunting conspiracy theories, we definitely haven't said anything that doesn't fit those tropes.

That's because for liberals/progressives the past doesn't exist.  When was the last time any of them looked back and checked their work?  Did anything accomplish what they wanted from it?  Did Live Aid actually help people in Africa or was most of the "aid" diverted to or stolen by warlords?  It's always about a "reset" to "year zero".  Start over and learn nothing.

Lord forbid they criticize themselves.  They'll attack each other but won't look in the mirror.

You may not have posted the fake ticket conspiracy, but lots of other people did. It's embarrassing.

On the other hand, you did post an AI-slop analysis defending a goalpost move claiming that the movie breaking all sorts of financial records is still a flop unless it makes between $1.2-1.6 billion. For reference, Nolan's bestselling movie of all time was $1.1 billion (Dark Knight Rises), and the bestselling R movie of all time was $1.3 billion (Deadpool 3). Do you honestly believe that the investors in this movie went into it knowing the film would lose money unless it approximately matched or even outsold two massive Hollywood records? I get that Hollywood accounting involves plenty of weirdness, but come on.

The copium-huffing obsession over this movie is astounding.

More and more I find myself seeing the horseshoe model of politics becoming a reality.

A few years ago Bryan Cranston was in a movie where he played at quadriplegic and the woke left lost their minds over it, saying that an actual quadriplegic should have been cast in the role. The whole thing became a mess of identity politics and tribalistic gate keeping. At the time I thought to myself, “getting that worked up over a movie has to be a sign of mental illness. “

And now, this thread.

Had Grok run the numbers;

Avg ticket price:
Gladiator (2000)- $5.39, $10-$11 in 2026 dollars
Troy (2004)- $6.21, $11-$12 in 2026 dollars
Odyssey (2026)- $15.32

After adjusting for inflation, 2026 Odyssey tickets are still 40-50% higher

That means that The Odyssey would have to make $912M to match Gladiator

Im glad im not the only one.  I see people bitching about the translation, and using modern words, which didnt bother me at all.

I know Homer is light bed time reading for everyone else, but it took a long ass time to get through The Iliad (Robert Fagles translation), and its great story, but damn was that a tough read.

Right, but that just means the amount of money spent on modern movies is irrational. We’ve got movies being made with such bloated budgets that they statistically can’t make a profit even if they do well. Some of those lesser box office flop Marvel movies would have done all right if they kept the budgets reasonable.

It’s the equivalent of bragging about making a million dollars when I started out with two million.

I won't pay to watch it.  May watch it later when I can see it free.

I think perhaps many people who say it was really good have nothing else to compare it to.  They've never read the Odyssey nor seen another movie about it.

How would they really know if it was a good adaptation or a bad one?

Like most books adapted to screen, most people just dont care.

Case in point, the people who dragged the Lord of the Rings for not including Tom Bombadil or the scouring of the Shire.  For people really into the source material it mattered, for everyone else they just want a good entertaining story.

The big benefit to this movie succeeding is some of those viewers will now go and read the book, keeping it relevant for another generation.

Exactly. I'll reserve judgement until I see it when it's on streaming.

Some of the casting is gay and retarded, but outside of that I haven't heard any major complaints.

Leaving out Tom Bombadil or The Scouring is not an apt comparison to deconstructing Odysseus, Penelope, and Telemachus as a Western heroes.

What about making Gimli comic relief?

I havnt read the Odyssey since high school, I bet many others here havnt either.  Hard to think these are sacred characters of western civilization when everyone had to run to YouTube or Wikipedia for a refresher on what the original characters were.

I’ve seen enough of the movie in clips to know that if the writing is that bad, it cannot be “great”

Ah, now that's something that can be interacted  on.

I looked over the numbers it output before posting it and they're not out  of line with costs for those things that I've seen before with things in that bracket and I suspect may be a bit under, given how expensive those imax cameras are to rent, and how expensive that film stock is.

P&A I've seen are routinely 80-150 million, and the participations/etc were in line with things seen done by disney and estimated by places like issuu.

The fact that theaters only return a percentage of ticket price is just common knowledg and can be reliably sussed out from financial reports required to be done by law.

The 2 to 2.5x over actual costs is just known.

Hollywood accounting is so hilariously bad and lying that it has it's own wiki page. Some of the for instances there are things like studios saying that batman 1989 and jackson's LOTR trilogy weren't profitable, so neener neener, we don't have to pay out the big bucks.

Movies used to get to be profitable because of ancillary sales outside of the theater or theatrical reruns after first run.

I really shouldn't have to point out that when there's that much money flying around that quickly, financial sharks can swim away with big profits even if the overall thing is a loss.

added: and as far as huffing the copium?

Those things are all the same way you'd account for the real production costs and net vs gross of any movie, at all, pretty much ever. Excluding that digital only movies don't have film stock /development / prints costs the same way.

I'm not an expert. I just read stuff. It's a useful thing to do. All the sources were there so people can go check.

Now the translator whom Nolan was influenced by is slamming him:

Nothing convincing to say

Emily Wilson, a translator responsible for the 2017 edition of the epic poem, slammed Christopher Nolan‘s adaptation after the director claimed Wilson’s translation was an influence on his work

According to Wilson, Nolan’s script lacks “psychological, emotional, political and ethical depth.”

“It has nothing convincing to say about time, memory, history, [or] war,” she wrote in an essay for the August 13, 2026, London Review of Books which was published on Monday, July 27. “I had hoped that Nolan’s affinity with these Homeric themes might push him to new creative heights, and enable him to conjure more believable characters. But The Odyssey features his usual combination of grandiosity and superficiality … the film’s vision is too confused, its characters too underdeveloped, to deliver what it half-promises in terms of big ideas – although it is very good at conveying big bangs and big giants.”

Wilson, a classical studies professor at the University of Pennsylvania, explained that Nolan’s big screen adaptation “lacks many of the elements that make the poem great.”

Despite Wilson’s criticism, the film, which hit theaters earlier this month, has become a massive blockbuster success and earned rave reviews from critics and moviegoers alike.

While speaking to Empire magazine in November 2025, Nolan revealed he took inspiration from Wilson’s translation, specifically the opening line of Homer‘s epic. Though Wilson was aware of the praise, she claimed, “I would be ashamed to have written any part of this script.”

Wait...

So, the person whose "woke" interpretation of the poem was supposedly the core of the reason we were supposed to hate the movie, doesn't think her interpretation... was properly interpreted?

But the "proof" this movie is woke is that interpretation.

This is some Inception-level outrage shit. Nolan can make a movie about the internet derp about his movie.

Uh ... the proof is the stunt casting and it intentionally being shoved that in our faces, by the people responsible for the movie. That did not happen in a vacuum, it's been done over and over and over and we've been told why it was being done before.

The other proofs re: that hollywood can't handle any books will come in the changes made that don't serve the story and that are not required by the format change.

This appears to have been a nolan movie, not the odyssey, and that's not surprising.

Hollywood hasn't been able to handle these kinds of sources cleanly in ... forever. Even demille's 1950s ten commandments crammed speculations and the like into the content, and it was much better to the source than anything since that I've seen.

From the evidence I've seen, this appears to be just a part of the nature of the beast.

But I guess now the pendulum is over on the "ok, now everyone attack the anti-hollywood side" and that's what the crowd is going to do for a while, because that's what's cool just right now.
