When I was a kid, many of the Christmas tree lots would hang a deer or a bear from a pole and display it at the front of their sales lot. Whenever we drove past a Christmas tree lot, I would look to see if I could find a deer or bear. The other day while I was driving past a lot, I realized that I am still looking for a deer or bear, but I have not seen one on a lot in many, many years. I realize that this is probably considered "un-PC" these days. Does anyone still see this in other areas? I realize this was probably only done in the colder northern states. |
You mean a real deer/bear, or one made of lights, or a plywood cutout, or what? |
Not a noose. It was 2 birch trees crossed on one end...2 more trees on the other end...with another tree as a cross post. It was just like I have seen people use for hanging deer by their cabins during deer hunting season. |
I sometimes hang real, dead deer from trees in my back yard, but they rarely attract people. |
Well, I guess us city folk are attracted easily. |
think i solved your riddle - could it be it was not many, but just one, and one year it was a deer one year a bear.....? maybe those were the two years that you first imprinted memories of getting Christmas trees? Maybe you just assumed every lot did this. Sorry to diminish your experience. It's kind of like me assuming everyone's Christmas experience involved your dad making you eat mistletoe berries then watching you projectile vomit....everyone did that, right? right? |
Sorry but this is not a riddle. No, it wasn't just one place. My grandmother lived 3 suburbs away from us, and at this this time of year, there were probably 8 to 10 lots that we would pass going to her house. It was unusual if a lot didn't have one or the other...or both on display. My sister was 4 years older than me and she mentioned this a couple years ago too. |
