Aside from corrosion resistance, what are the pros and cons of having a chrome-lined barrel? Is corrosion such a concern? Sorry, but I'm afraid I'm not as knowledgeable about this as I should be, and this decision will be one I have to make when I order my next baby. Thanks! |

Chrome lined bores generally last longer than non lined tubes. As I understand (military or someone with better experience, don't hesistate to correct if I'm wrong), the chrome lining is there for sustained burst/full auto fire. Aids in maximizing barrel life. Chrome lining isn't exactly perfect though, so generally speaking, a chrome lined barrel will be less accurate than a stainless steel or chromemoly barrel. |
You are correct in all of your above statements. -Ben |
Depends on what you want to do. Premium barrel makers (Krieger, Pac-nor, Douglas, etc) don't offer chrome lining as far as I know. Do you want a barrel that's gonna be as accurate as possible? Then you're probably gonna want a stainless steel or chromemoly non lined barrel. Do you want a barrel with perfectly reasonable accuracy and long life? Go chrome lined. |
Cool. For once. |
The U.S. military chrome-lines BBL'S because the "Average" trigger-puller is a kid who doesn't know (Or want to know) much at all about weapons maintenence and chrome-lining "Stupid-Proofs" the gov's investment. Chrome lining is a great idea but, if you CLEAN your damn gun after firing it it's not absolutely mandatory. |
They don't offer the chromed-lining because they must chrome many barrel in order to be economically feasable. My thought is that for many of us, we won't see the accuracy difference between chromed and non-chromed because we just aren't that good. But the chrome-lining will extend the useful life of the barrel many fold. |

You know all those horrible things you've heard about M-16's Jamming in Combat? Yeah, You know Dead G.I.'s and Marines trying to Un- Jamm their rifles? Yeah, that is why they are all chrome lined now it's not just corrosion it also keeps the carbon from building up on the slippery surface provided by............Ta -da. Chromed Barrels and chambers!! BTW, Stainless Barrels are good to too!! |
Well, so far I think I see a trend! ![]() Application will be an M14 wanna-be configured as a battle rifle, with intent to use as such should the SHTF, as well as a reasonably-effective long-range weapon with addition of appropriate scope. I will NOT be doing minute-of-gnat's-ass shooting with this thing, just minute-of-human-head at various ranges. |
Sounds like a chrome lined tube is what you want then. |
