I have been tasked by my pastor (an ARFcommer), to head up the security ministry at church. I don't wear a tie or have the face for either greeting or welcoming :) I was wondering if any of you had any ideas or tips for stuff that I could think about or possibly implement. Don't want to go all church ninja, but want it to be more than just having somebody walk through the building at the end of the service.

We have a quiet group of upstanding men that CCW during church. The congregation doesn't know. Several of us sit at the back and several at the front. The little old ladies would have a fit so we quietly wait for something we hope never happens.

Do you have any way of making sure that people can't wander in off the street and head right to where the children are? What happens if somebody starts being rowdy in a service, escort them out?

Couple guys at each entrance armed, then a few armed congregants throughout the sanctuary. I also highly recommend considering one or two armed people around children if you have a children's ministry.

I work with a children's church camp , and we have had to hire a few off-duty policemen due to various threats either to kids at camp or the church as a whole. Crazy times we live in, so it would be a good idea for Christians & churches to be armed.

Well, my church makes sure we have regulars clued in as to whom to make aware of anything suspicious or important. the more eyes the better. our biggest concern is a medical emergency actually. our first service is 75% senior citizens, usually several hundred. we want to be prepared for first aid, heart attacks, bad falls, ect.

the biggest thing, is that nobody goes unnoticed, not for security sake primarily, but because of the good nature of the people that attend. anytime a new face shows up, they are greeted and welcomed repeatedly. if you are new to my church, be prepared to make a lot of friends fast.

One of the churches in my area announced it that at each service there would be a minimum of 2 or 3 individuals CCWing, along with the pastor who would always be OCing at the church with one other individual OCing as well on the front row. I guess they had had multiple, verified threats to the church.

one local church has an 8 man swat team and over 40 armed deacons. I would do limited access points, cameras, first aid, setup safe routes, safe rooms

Our church is rather small, and I don't think that many of them would want to carry concealed. Maybe 3 people total, including pastor, might be up to doing it. We actually have two MDs in the congregation, so I'm hoping that they could deal with something until 911 showed up. One thing some of my friends commented on is the friendliness. I don't think everybody would notice new faces, but enough would that I'm sure they would be greeted, and I would be tipped off by the welcoming or greeting committee if anything was sketchy.

I'm thinking sandbagged emplacements on either side of the main entrance containing Browning M2's with overlapping lanes of fire.  Plus roving two man security patrols packing AR's, Glocks in drop leg holsters, vests with plates, etc.  Probably should set up a two man over watch position on the roof.  Make sure they have 1000 yards of visibility around the entire building.  If you have any more questions I suggest googling Gecko45.  He was a pretty high speed dude that ran security at a big time mall.  Really innovative when it came to security issues.  He developed the technique of taping multiple plates together so that they could stop several .308 rounds and in effect made himself into mobile cover.   The idea being that he would draw the fire while his partner assembled the NEF take down rifle and engaged the shooter while using Gecko45 as cover.  Like I said before, really innovative stuff.  He was truly a man before his time.  Don't listen to any of the people calling him a troll.  They just don't understand what true security professionals go through.

One, never underestimate your opponent. Expect the unexpected. Two, take it outside. Never start anything inside the bar (church) unless it's absolutely necessary. And three, be nice.

Our kids are in the same area we are. We welcome people off the street to learn about God. If somebody gets rowdy we call 911. If someone gets deady we do what we have to do.

I position myself in the back corner of the gymnasium, giving me a clear view of both of the double door entrances to the gym. However, only one of the entrances to the gym, is the main entrance, and I'm about 40 feet from it.

I wasn't asked to provide security for our church, but since I was on our setup team for a year and a half, and ran our soundboard, you could kind of consider me staff. I've relieved myself of those duties for now, though. There are other CHL holders in the church, as well as police officers. My pastor's wife asked me if I carried during service, and all I said was I may or may not.

Only one person at church knows that I carry.

We have several off-duty LEO's working security at the church I attend. Some in the sanctuary during service, others walking around the building as well. There are several members who are not LEO that are prepared as well.

I had a interesting thing happen one Sunday. I set down in the front. I usually set by a good friend of mine who at the time was a undercover narcotics officer. During the service a guy walks in off the street and makes it all the way down to the front row. He sets in a seat that is on the isle. Our church tries to cater to people who may be coming to church for the first time. You see people in jeans, shorts, dress clothes, you name it. We do not care about how people dress. That being said, this guy comes in off the street wearing alot of black clothing and carring a black gym bag. Our church is in a old theatre so its sort of a dark room to begin with. Well there was just a couple of people that paid any attention to this guy coming in. The ones that did was about to go nuts but couldnt do anything! It made for a long tense service!

I observed several things that day.
Hardly anybody pays attention to what is going on around them!
With the security our church does have, it was still easy to get in. (If he had be seen coming in by security he would have been asked some questions about the gym bag.)
Several off duty officers wished they had been armed that day just in case of emergency.
I already was well aware of this but It goes to show that I am in charge of my safety. Do not count on the police for your safety. Sometimes they show up for work without the proper equipment.

Thanks bcr308, I hadn't thought of making sure to ask about bags, hasn't happened yet.
