I found out today that I have an opportunity for a civil detention officer. I lost my job Sunday (no fault of my own) and have been sending out resumes all week. Background is in medical but can't seem to find an opportunity there. Just received an email from the county jail where I am invited to a meeting discussing hiring process, training, scheduling. Will have an interview then take the national detention officer test. I'm nervous about the test. Any tips for the test and interview? Any tips on what they will ask? Thanks. |

Bring a bottle of water with you. Occasionally take a sip when just talking with them. When you get asked a hard question or need a moment to think, delibetately take a sip before you reply. This does three things. First, it buys you 10-15 seconds to formulate an answer. Second it doesn't make it look like you froze up. Finally, if you did in fact start to freeze, taking an action physically can help you move off TDC mentally. |

| I'm on my last of 25 years in Corrections. They want to determine if you have a cool head and not a hot head. Anything I was not sure of I said " I'm sure there's a policy covering that, and that's what I would follow. They might ask you what would you do if an inmate threw piss on you. Splitting his head is not the correct answer. |

They may tell you that's not how they do things there but answer with "I am not familiar with your policy and procedures yet but that is how I would've handled the situation." They want to know if you're easily persuaded or will stick with your initial decision whether it's wrong or not. Remember: Fair, firm, and consistent. |
