Whoever thought it was a good idea to package multi-tools and pocket knives in those impossible to open piece of shit plastic clamshell containers needs to get The Boats.  If I'm buying a multi-tool or a pocket knife it is quite possible I currently don't have one, which means even though I just paid for a multi-tool and pocket knife I still can't fucking use them until I acquire another one to open the fucking package.

You don't have a knife or scissors?

I have always thought more people probably get injured trying to open those damn things than the number of thefts they prevent.

Just a warning, I saw a LifeHack that suggested using a canopener to get into the clamshell.

Well, it kind of worked. But it stripped the gears on my "Made In The USA" can opener.

I hate them too.  Most if not all pocket knives and multi-tools that come in clamshell packaging are turds though.

I have a really nice scar on my hand from trying to open the rest of my leatherman tool packaging with my brand new leatherman.

i had never heard of using a can opener, i'll try that next time, but i have had good success cutting the sealed "flange" of the packaging on three sides and opening it up that way.

The crap sucks.  I bought 4 clamp on rod holders for my boat for this years crappie fishing and I spent 20 minutes opening each package with my Kershaw Blur to get all the individual parts out.

Local news runs a story every Christmas about being careful opening them. Apparently lots of people go in for stitches after cutting themselves on those packages.

It is the worst, and greatest packaging for many reasons.  It's awesome to see them do it at the packaging show, but a pita to take stuff out of.

It reduces pilferage. It makes it easier to measure inventory.  It makes is much easier to RFI track. Makes it easier to merchandise.  Actually, the idea was genius.

Hundreds of thousands of people bitch about that. Amazon has spent millions of dollars working with suppliers to eliminate that type of packaging whenever possible. I hate clamshell packaging, I understand its purpose, and how cheap it is, and why it will remain in use for regular retail vendors (it deters theft, they make the package just large enough to be harder to conceal, plus they can ad RFID tags to the packaging, and it is difficult to remove the product from the package quickly without being noticed).

in my defense, i wasn't old enough to vote then.

i didn't cut myself on the packaging, as i recall, i had gotten the knife out and was trying to get the rest of the stuff out, and the knife folded up on me (this was before they were all-locking) and i stabbed my right hand right in the meat between thumb and pointer.

Yep, most people pay extra for the frustration free packaging, too.
