There is a girl I work with whom swears they are one in the same. I showed her some pictures via google images. Not to much help. So she say's "I'll call YOUR gun shop and ask if they carry Glock 19 Clips. If they say yes, then I am right and you are wrong." So she did and the idiot at the gun shop says "yes, we carry both" Post some pics or thoughts ARFCOM. |
| I used to use them interchangeably, but the more I worked (or should it be played) with weapons that loaded using an actual clip, the more I started using mag/magazine for magazines, and clip for stripper clips/Garand clips/other clips. I pretty much only use correct terminology now, but I don't care if someone says "clip." |
it's the difference between a car and a truck, how are you being a nagging nancy? A clip doesn't have moving parts ie follower and spring, and magazine does. Just because your surrounded by ignorant people, don't let it get you down, someone has to have the intelligence to get the others by in this world. |
+1 That's how I look at it. It's alot like the Pistol VS Revolver thing. Alot of folks I know don't THINK that a revolver is a "Pistol". Back in 2003 My unit was doing an M-240 range at FT Lewis and had a bunch of 2/75th Ranger NCO's there to help out and one of the SGT's commented that he couldn't wait for the AW ban to sunset so he could go out and buy a bunch of hi-capacity "Clips" for his personal M-92. I thought about correcting him but then thought...how fuckin' gay would THAT look! lol....."Hey there MR Ranger, You're all wrong callin' 'em clips. I may not jump out of airplanes or know how to secure an airfield I dropped into at 3am (Under fire!) but, I KNOW the difference between clips and magazines!" |
I dont know of the video. I only know of that one pic that has been posted here. Times have changed..lol...I remember 3+ pages of corrections and bashing in the past... |
Should I also correct all the idiots that use the word "data" incorrectly - as a singular, and not properly as a plural? I'm completely serious, btw Once you are en expert in some field, there are probably all kinds of minor things that laypeople mispronounce, or slightly misunderstand. If it's an important issue that goes to their understanding of something, or the ability to do something correctly, of course it should be corrected. However, I personally think it is rude and pointless to anally correct people on a minor point when both people KNOW what is being talked about, and it's not really an important matter. But, I do understand that for some people it is more important that it is to me. |
You should have known better. Nobody is gonna to lose a sale to correct an idiot customer who is always right. |
Agreed. If I worked in a gun shop(and especially if I owned the gun shop) I'd just answer in the affrimative to a stupid assed question like that knowing hwat they MEANT...but I'd know they were a firearm retard. |

What in God's name difference does it make? If you are not intelligent enough to argue a point as dumb as this, you deserve to lose the argument. The best defense is a good offense: "Just what do you mean by difference between clip and mag, and why is that important to you?" "You don't think 30 or so people could rush some asshole with a handgun rather than die like sheep?" Christ, act like someone who might have a clue what they're talking about! Man, we're screwed. |
It is my understanding that back in the day, clip was used to describe a magazine. For example, IIRC John Browning used the term clip to describe magazines. And Colt called his revolvers pistols. |
|
A lot of fish and game law books reference loaded firearms saying no ammuniton may be in the chamber or magazine, but is permissable in a clip as long as the clip is not in contact with the firearm. I also had a Chief WO way back tell me that a magazine is built in to the firearm and clips are removable. IE tubular magazine...... Terminology seems to have evolved some.... but its all the same. If you are talking firearms with someone be happy there is anothe gun enthusiast out there,,,,, dont piss on them for un -tacticool terminology! |
Sorry, didnt really mean to be a wise ass..... but who has told you the true definition? What makes you the expert? Still not being a wiseass.... but what basis are you correcting others on? If everyone understands that the two words can mean the same thing what diff does it make? What is the tube called underneath the barrel of a lever action rifle? Why do F&G law books reference load magazines and clips removed from the rifle? I had an old Chief that seemed to know what he was talking about and his answer was clips can be removed from the firearm and magazines cannot. Whats a magazine? Is it a cartridge dispenser or something you read? Seems like there are better things in this world to nit pick about! |
Have her call back and ask if they sell "those doohickeys that hold the bullets inside the handle of a Glock 19." Because they are in business, they will say, "Yes, we have those doohickeys." That does not prove that the correct term is "doohicky;" it proves only that gun stores are happy to take money from airheads. |
|
clip/magazine ---> different to/two/too ---> different there/their/they're ---> different using an apostrophe to incorrectly make a plural --> different word If you disapprove of one but think being corrected on the others makes someone a "nazi", you're a hypocrite. Either you care about nonambiguity in language or you do not. |
|
A clip is not a magazine, a mag is not a clip. Neither is a grip a stock, and "stock" does not mean grip. A bullet's not a cartridge, nor is the converse true. Folks should be more careful when they use the words they do. A revolver has a cylinder, but only one, you see, And cylinders have chambers, five or six, most commonly. Neither is a cylinder a barrel, as some say; The barrel is the tube that guides the bullet on its way. I do not mean to nitpick, but improvement would be seen, If we could bring ourselves to say exactly what we mean. Jeff Cooper |
So if I went to the doctor and said, "I got bit by a poisonous snake", do you think he would ask me why I ate the venom gland? |
He would probably discharge you because he misunderstood your meaning. |
|
My 30-round mags hold 30 cartridges, but I don't know how many bullets they would hold. Would it be fair to remove the spring and follower to find out? One thing I WOULD like to know is, what, exactly is a barrel shroud? Isn't it that thing that goes up? Video
