Hey all. I am considering joining the Coast Guard. Do any of yall have any experience with them? I am a 18yo high school graduate and second semester Administration of Justice major, with a planned career in law enforcement. I want to go Gunner's Mate if possible. Any experiences or words of wisdom? John |

I looked into the Coast Guard when I was planning on USNA (as a back up). It turns out I'm "medically unfit for military service" anyway. From what I was told: CG has a smaller buerucracy (sp), smaller sevice and all. And you'll get to be at sea more if that's what you really want. And not only at sea more, but usually not for long periods of time (unless you get deployed overseas. I know a guy who joined the CG in the 60's figuing he'd be in Deleware Bay or something and ended up on the Mekong). CG also never gets as much funding as it needs (although this might have changed since 9/11. When I was looking at the CG Academy they were having trouble getting fuel for SAR in the Gulf of Mexico). It seemed then, and seems now like a pretty good choice. I also like them because they were the only service who looked at my medical sheet and instead of saying "No, forever and ever Amen." like everybody else did, said "We can't take you now, but go to college, get a degree and come talk to us again." |

OK. I plan on going and talking to a recruiter within a week or so, once I've done my homework on it. It seems more law enforcement directed and less pure "Blow the shit outta anything that moves." Aiming for the career in law enforcement, I can see this being a very good thing, for the mindset, and for the resume. John |

As it happens, I'm in the Coast Guard and have been for the last 15 years. If you have any specific questions, feel free to email me at . Jamie |

I'm also in the Coast Guard. Been stuck behind a desk for far too long, but I remember deployments to the Caribbean Sea (USCGC DALLAS). If you have any questions, feel free to send an e-mail to me, as well. Email: |

Knee Deep Navy. Not sure about USCG but USN has MA(Master-at-Arms) billets open and that is a military LEO position that would translate to civilian LEO better than GM in either service I would imagine. Oh, hope you Coasties don't take too much offense at the above jibe. Just a little inter-service bashing[:D] |

There are a couple of us Coasties on the board. Where are you stationed? I'm on a River Tender in Natchez, Ms. [:(] Being stuck behind a desk sux, the closest that I ever came to that was being stationed at the National Motor Lifeboat School.....but it was an awesome job. There is nothing wrong with being a Coastie. You do what you have to do, and if the Coast Guard is the option, then you made a wise choice |

Hey, Fijfi, I'm currently stationed in sunny Jacksonville with the Field Intelligence Support Team. It's a pretty interesting job, and a step from my last job in DC. Hopefully next tour they'll let me get back to sea. How was the MLB school? Never had a chance to play on one. Been lurking here for about two years, BTW. You guys are a bad influence, I'm about to get my second AR (RRA 16"). OmegaRed, I heard CGIS (Coast Guard Investigative Service) is a good way to go. They're credentialed agents who work within the CG and alongside local PD and their counterparts in Army CID, NCIS, ect. BTW, I got lucky; I'm a smidge over 6'. |

I did a lot of traveling as I was part of the Standardization Team, met a lot of great people and saw a bunch of stations that I would like to have been stationed, unfortunately the detailer saw fit for me to be the EPO on a WLR instead of at a Lifeboat station. [:(] But at least I'm keeping my seatime to land ratio about even. And the seapay is alot better now than when I went to shore duty, 7 years ago.[;)] Jamie |
