Love the nuke targets. Courtesy of my old unit, 1/32 FA (Lance) out of Hanau. When were you there? If it was from '84 to '89, did you ever bring your launcher into hangers on Fliegerhorst Kaserne for training? We used to have a Lance unit use our hanger if we had space. Cause if you did, I was probably there watching you missile monkeys playing around. I've got lots of time up at Fulda too, the airfield is gone now. I could barely make out where it used to be on Google Earth. |

We'd use our survey and laying equipment to watch the hanger hawks rip the rodents to shreds when we weren't dicking around on the missiles. Fliegerhorst was modernized through 1990-1991 into a really top notch Kaserne (new roads, motor parks, motor pools, vehicle washers, etc.). Then they moved everybody out. |

neat, its thanks to an ARFcom thread like this that I read "Red Storm Rising" excellent read. Anyway, one of my old co-workers, when I was a civilain, was stationed at K-town from 68-70. He said Germany was nothing but US and NATO bases, but it would have just been a speedbump for the Russian Army had we gone to war. Must have been some cool yet scary shit.
to the Cold War Warriors and USAF SAC Trained Killers , thanks for standing guard and WINNING the Cold War.

Are the yield amounts kT or MT? I could be wrong, but probably in KT. There's a 50 listed, so unless we were planning on using the Tsar Bomba, I doubt it's in MTs. I was thinking along those lines. That still looks like one hell of a mushroom cloud farm... |

Are the yield amounts kT or MT? the map does not say. I was thinking that battlefield tac-nukes are in the KT range, but I don't know what a Pershing missle is rated. FWIW, Wiki had this info on Pershing missiles... Production history Designer The Martin Company Designed 1958–1960 Manufacturer The Martin Company Produced 1960–1969 Number built 24 tactical launchers 754 missiles (including Pershing IA) Specifications Weight 4,655 kilograms (10,263 lb) Length 10.5 metres (34.4 ft) Diameter 1.02 metres (3.3 ft) –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Blast yield W50 nuclear warhead 60 kilotons of TNT (0.25 PJ) 200 kilotons of TNT (0.84 PJ) 400 kilotons of TNT (1.7 PJ) |

Maybe. |

Stationed in Schweinfurt. Our GDP had us about 20 K from the nearest Class 1 bridge across the Main River. We were briefed that our Brigade was opposed by the 57th Guards Motorized Rifle Division. A division of commies in front of us and a river behind us. My rifle platoon at one time had only 17 guys.
I think we would have sucked it up bad. PS: I did keep a SMLM Map and still have it today. Also a range map of Grafenwohr and all of our GDP sector... ah, the places I got lost, er, mis-oriented. By the way: the map in the OP is marked USACGSC. That is the US Command and General Staff College located at Ft Leveanworth KS |

For a few months in 1967 I was stationed at the 17th ASA Field Station at Rothwesten. Kassel was a couple of clicks south and Fulda was a couple of clicks east. Over the 5K Zone was the Third Soviet Shock Army. They were not mis-named.
It was all Ground Zero if the ballon ever went up. |

I didn't think there were nukes of any kind in the single-digit KT range There were lots of them. Some dial-a-yield warheads go from sub-kiloton to hundreds of kilotons. What is a dial-a-yield warhead? Does that mean the blast effect is adjustable by the user?

More injection = more Boom. Go read Sum of All Fears. |

Former speed bump here.
