You know, these bastards will penalize the hell out of you if you turn in an assignment one day late, but God forbid they ever grade the fucking thing!

My professors are very timely in general, YMMV.

I've had instances where I didn't get a grade for an exam until it was time for the next exam.

Actually for that matter, I've had instances where I never got a single grade until the course was over.

I have no idea how old motown_steve is, but don't assume that just because someone is in college that they're a "little fella" or straight out of high school. Not that there's anything wrong with that either.

It always amazed me when my real analysis professor and micro econ professor (the class involves a bunch of analysis) would grade exams and homework in 24 hours, and my 200 level poly sci teacher takes a fucking month to grade a 4 page essay.

Poop rolls downhill, not up (well, except at that weird Magnetic Hill in Moncton, New Brunswick, but there were no professors or superior officers to challenge the theory)

I've had that happen before! A professor didn't give me a grade at the end of a semester. I kept worrying about it and worrying about it until a grade showed up in blackboard. I think she just logged on and assigned me a passing grade without checking any of my assignments or tests. I didn't complain because she really sucked and literally would show up to class and not know what she was supposed to teach.

I have one that still hasn't graded a test from September because he's "too busy." Now, at my university, the Scantrons are put in an envelope, sent through university mail to the data center where they run and automatically place the grades onto Blackboard. The only thing the professor has to do is put them in an envelope with a key and give them to their secretary. The rest is done for them. Since this guy had his TAs cut because there's no need for them in this gen. ed. class, he's protesting by not grading anything in class until the day grades are due. Note that gen. ed. professors are required to issue midterm grades and this one just gave everyone an A so he wouldn't get flagged in the system. He's up for tenure review in the spring.

Some of the university professors want to unionize and actually are working with the government to get it done. I say if they want to be unionized, they should lose their professional status (no tenure) and go onto the time clock and work 40 hours a week. That will give them plenty of time to grade things.

The odd thing is that the professors that want to unionize include all of the liberal arts along with the hard sciences. The leader is a chemistry professor. All but a handful of COBA professors oppose it though. COBA also is what the university is known for so it's a pretty divided campus professor wise. All fun in academia.

A third of my classes have been that way so far.

Another third give things back graded four weeks or so after we turn them in.

Another third gives things back the next class period.

I have a "No Late Work" policy.  After class begins, on the due date, your assignment is late.  It's a zero. No exceptions.

I had 250 students register for my fall courses.  I give two assignments per week.  On average, I grade about 400 papers per week at the beginning of a semester. The numbers drop sharply throughout the semester from students dropping, failing to attend, etc.

But, every submitted assignment is graded, recorded, filed and returned with 48 hours.

IMHO, no late work, means no late professor as well.

I know a lot of professors in the sciences, and none of them only works 40 hours a week.  I'm a researcher at a university, and on a normal day I'm in my lab from 8 until 6.  When things get busy, (eg. grant deadline approaching, important experiment involving multiple colleagues, experiments or protocols that are unavoidably long, etc) I get up to 12-14 hour days.  Life in academia is a riot

This class wasn't a hard science. Like the business world, the majority of professors that want to unionize are the ones that don't do research and haven't applied for grants ever or in years. It's fairly clear that they're worried with the economy as it is they're going to get pushed to retirement or denied tenure. In reality only about 20-30% of professors want to unionize (although the chemistry professor leader says that 70% do).

The highly rated professors either don't openly want a union or openly discourage unionization. They also seem to tend to be the ones who do research, show up in national newspapers, get published in journals, return papers/exams in a decent amount of time, students seek their classes, etc.

And THAT is why I went to professional school.  I don't envy you guys one bit, particularly for having to deal with boatloads of smartass undergrads with no work ethic and huge attitudes. I couldn't do it.  You'd see me on the evening news, holed up in my office in a standoff with the cops after having murdered a student.

I had that happen last fall. No one in the class got a grade back until the day AFTER the final exam. I had that same instructor this semester and he just didn't ever give back several quizzes and tests. I still don't know what my grades on those assignments were, but I got a B in the class, so I don't really care.

It is their game and they hold the cards. For the most part follow the rules in the syllabus/give them what they want, when they want it and you will succeed.
